WORDPRESS AND THE PANDEMIC ON THE DAY THE TITANIC SANK

Blogging Insights — WordPress Pandemic Performance

I can truly say that the Internet was a lifesaver during the pandemic — and still is — but WordPress has had little to do with that. If anything, their persistent refusal to listen to anything their customers — aka “us” — has to say about what we want and need as users has made a difficult situation more difficult.

I have put a lot of effort into trying to make their “block” editor (which isn’t actually a block editor) function in a way that serves my interests. Since I do just as much — and these days, even more — blogging as a photographer than as a writer, their unwillingness to reconsider forcing us all to use the same format if that does not serve our needs has made me ponder if this is what I want to do with my time.

I have loved blogging. I’ve loved the comradery, the international relationships, the unique insights gained by talking with people from all around the world. But this format WordPress has decided we must use or give up works poorly for graphics. When I try to explain the problem, they treat me as if I’m an at-will employee at minimum wage. This alone is interesting since I pay them. So how did it happen that they view themselves as more important than their customers?

Why do they care how I write my posts? Why does it consume them? Why do we all have to produce our work in lockstep and march to the beat of their drum? Why does it matter?

I could live with their straight text and I suppose I can reduce my graphics to single photographs. I’m just not sure that I feel inclined to pay them for the privilege of doing what I’m told. I’ve never been very good at doing what I’m told and the more you push me, the less interested I am in cooperating. This is not new behavior, either. I’m willing to take advice and suggestions, but I loathe being forced.

This blog was my escape. I could fly to anywhere on or even off the earth on virtual wings. Now, thinking about WordPress is more like a lead weight. Whatever I do — whether I stick with it and spend money I don’t have for a service will never be what I need or want — or I quit in defeat, I won’t leave feeling like a winner. After nine dedicated years, shouldn’t I get a prize or something? Instead, I guess I get what so many other working people have gotten: shoved out the door. Except how bizarre is it that I am the CUSTOMER and it’s the company I have been paying for years is doing the shoving?

I don’t know what I’m going to do. I keep hoping that the Great Minds who run WordPress will have an epiphany. They will suddenly realize it doesn’t matter how we write or present our graphic arts — or in what format we do it. What ought to matter is that we produce quality material.

I’m not seeing a happy ending and that makes me feel surprisingly bad. I’ve put so much work into this blog. And it is all going to vanish as if it never existed. But then again, so will I and everyone else. I guess I should be satisfied with that. Nothing lasts forever.

  1. I think this is the thing that gets me the most . Their appalling rudeness and lack of interest in our problems.I have read so many comments from bloggers who dared to complain only to be told “Bad luck, this is how things are now.” Do they really want their paid customers to leave? It’s astounding. I wish that we could organise a WordPress wide strike but unfortunately we’d probably have to use WordPress to organise it so it would be a bomb. Maybe we need some kind of header like the one used by many of us when we had that pirated site issue a year or two ago. Everyone could head all their posts “WordPress Doesn’t Care.” for a week and see if that got a response. 🙂

  4. Hope you keep posting, hate to lose good reading and pics. I haven’t had the way to do much with my blog, and have heard everyone saying the editor is gone nuts. I would miss your posts. Did you try the open writer or resetting wordpress to an earlier setting? Buying a service should get a customer whatever they want, so I do understand.

    • I like posting. I just hate WordPress. I really don’t know what I’m going to do. I need to resolve this because staying angry isn’t healthy. But it isn’t simple, not after all these years.

  5. We must be twins born in different area and eras. I have the same complaints, and have heard them voiced by almost every person I follow and read on WP. I have oftened wondered what would happen if we all stopped at the same time. I’ve been blogging for about ten years, have paid for three of the blogs before learning the hard truth. All three paid blogs were pirated and offered for sale by some company I don’t remember. Every effort to get them back was ignored by the “Happiness” team, who have never even tried to make me happy. And now it is so difficult to get anything posted. I’ve lost three posts this weekend alone, not able to find the saved — or should I say, supposedly saved drafts. They just disappear. I’m also considering just stopping. It was once fun and fulfilling, but now? Frustrating and depressing. I’ve made friends around the world, but have also lost most of them due to being pirated. I don’t know. Maybe I can find another blog provider and go with that, but then how do I find my friends from WP? And why DO they keep trying to “improve” things that are working out so well? I suddenly feel my age plus ten or twenty!

    • I can’t find any other providers. The few that exist are commercial, expensive AND use whatever format WordPress is using. It really is very depressing. I’ve put so much time and effort into this blog. I suppose it was going to end sometime. I just wasn’t really ready yet, but they have done everything they could to drive us away.

Aside from being bummed and angry, I’m baffled. WHY are they doing this? Why? What’s in it for them? I don’t get it.

      • I can’t understand it either, but so many people hate it that the only way to get their attention might be for everyone to stop en masse. SINCE THAT WILL NEVER HAPPEN WE HAVE TO DECIDE WHETHER TO CONTINUE BEING TOLD HOW WE ARE GOING TO BLOG OR JUST STOP DOING IT. I ONLY GET ON ONE OR TWO TIMES A WEEK NOW WHEN I USED TO SPEND DAY AND NIGHT ON THE BLOG. THEY’VE JUST CHANGED THE FORMAT ONE TOO MANY TIMES FOR ME, BUT THEN I SAID THAT THE LAST TIME ALSO.

        • I’m posting a lot less than I did and with a lot less enthusiasm. It stopped being fun two format changes ago. If it’s not fun, what is it?

          • This last time really did it for me, but it stopped being fun when my third blog was pirated. The so called “Happiness Engineers” wouldn’t do anything at all to help me recover them. A friend found the last one on some site listed for sale. She contacted me to ask why I was selling it, and that alerted me to try to recover it. The three I lost to pirates were all paid sites.

  6. I’ve posted twice today about my frustrations with WordPress, once in response to Dr. Tanya’s Blogging Insights prompt and one for Paula Light’s The Monday Peeve. The Blogging Insights post was mostly about the block editor and the Monday Peeve was about an unresolved bug in the WordPress app for iOS (iPhones). I really wish there was a viable blogging alternative to WordPress.

    • As far as I can tell, there is nothing else out there. WordPress gobbled up the competition and now it has none. And it is worse than any of the old ones it drove away. They all had other areas of business. so they are fine, but when they finally drive THEMSELVES out of business — which they will do eventually — they don’t have any other business. I will just laugh my ass off.

  7. Besides the Block Editor, they are messing with followers, too! According to them, I don’t follow you or a bunch of others–yet you are in both my Reader and my Inbox each day. I’m sure I am missing some posts from bloggers I didn’t realize I’m not following anymore–according to WP. Frustrating.

    • And when they accidentially dump a few thousand of our followers overnight and you ask them what happened, they will tell you that you don’t write well enough. They actually did that to me. I don’t know if I CAN continue to work with them. I feel so insulted by them, and so gut level angry. I’m having a hard time enjoying working on this even when I get motivated. They have really ruined this for me in so many different ways.
