I don’t even know what happened to the April 2021 file. It was there. I was cleaning out files from my OneDrive and somehow, it must have linked to my photo files, though I don’t know how. I had most of the pictures on CD cards, but some are missing.

I lost the tulips file. I had already uploaded some of them, but I’d done a bunch of new ones and they are gone. I did a lot of work on them last night.

I’ve been trying to find the lost files for hours and I’ve just had more than enough computer for the day.

We also managed to produce an audition tape for Garry using the tripod I never use and Owen fancy shmantzy iPhone because it had the right format (.mov) and we could just mail it straight from the phone — but in between we had to compress the file and it was lucky Owen has an old Mac that has files on it they no longer support because an uncompressed 5 minute .mov file is more than 500 gigabytes and you can’t m ail it.

This doesn’t explain how I managed to lose half a month of photographs. You know, I had this feeling I should back them up yesterday. I usually do a monthly backup and keep the cards for the month until I do the backup. Which I did, but there are still files missing and I don’t understand where they could have gone.

I learned a lot about making movies and I learned that I really need to offload some photos from my hard drive because it’s nearly full. I’m tired. So this is my contribution to the day. I was up early and now it’s late and tomorrow maybe I’ll figure out where that file went.

Or not.

  1. My filing system is chaotic. It’s not that I lose stuff. I just can’t find it half the time.
BUT boy when I do lose stuff it’s painful.

    • I have the same problem. I think many of us do. I’ve never found a good way to save pictures and I don’t have the time or energy to move each picture to its own special location, so it’s all months and years. I have to take my best guess — based on the season of the year — when whatever happened, happened.

  2. All photos are so beautiful Marilyn, thanks for posting them up.

You may missing your photos in some where there in your files.
I wish you could find them.

    • I think it might be because my hard drive is full. I didn’t know it, though I certainly should have checked. I have less than 100 MB left in my 1TB hard drive. That’s less than a two weeks of photography — and yesterday, I made two videos for Garry and THAT was 950 MB right there. I ordered a new backup drive last night because one of mine has gotten very slow. It’s 7 years old, so it has outlasted itself, but I think I’m going to buy one more. I’m going to have to move at least half my photography to externals. I can’t even take any more pictures right now. I need to do some serious backup and removing stuff from the drive.

I knew this would happen. I just didn’t know when. You can’t keep adding more material forever. Sooner or later, you have to remove stuff.

      • I have had problems with my old PC but I did not know it, that is why my PC stop working. I had lost my photos too. I could have my files out to the 5TB Expansion Portable Drive. Now I have an other PC, the second hand one, and I don’t like it very much. I may have to buy a new PC.
I would wish you and Garry well and happy.

  3. Fingers crossed they turn up today for you xxx

    • I think it’s because my hard drive is full. I hadn’t realized it, but now i have to not merely back up, but remove older files — at least half of them. It was inevitable, but I wasn’t looking. Yesterday, I started getting messages from Microsoft telling me my CloudDrive was full and did I want to buy more room. What?

Then, I looked at my 1TB HD (internal) and gee golly, I have less than 100 MB left on it. That’s probably why files have gone missing. NO ROOM. Also, no notifications. But to be fair, I turned off notifications, so it’s my own fault. Now, I’ve order another drive and I think I’m going to order one more. The two I’ve got are kind of old and even older — and getting to that age where they just slow down. I knew I was going to have to deal with this. I just didn’t think it was going to be right now.

I’m not taking any pictures until the new drives come. There’s no where to put them! The two videos I made for Garry yesterday were around 950 MB and that was the final blow. I wish I had the money to get a new computer, but laptops are limited by size. If you want really huge drives, you need a desktop and I don’t want to be tied to a desk.

As I said, probably my own fault.

  4. HI Marilyn. Boy I can imagine the agony of discovering that, somehow, you’ve misplaced a bunch of photos. This may help… I create a separate folder, on my computer, for each camera and try to download from the SD card after each day’s shooting, most times only the photos I definitely want to keep. In addition I have a 500GB external USB SSD that I use just to store photos, so the folders are then backed up on that SSD drive. I tend to keep the SD cards, in tact, for a long time before I wipe them and reformat. I’ve learned (the hard way) from my recording business to have several BU drives. So, like you, about once a week, maybe a month, I back up the whole computer to a 1 TB SSD. In the end, there are several places I can access my images. Hope this helps

    • It turns out that the real culprit is that my hard drive is full. I have two back up drives, but I still have everything on my hard drive IN the computer, too. Folders aren’t the answer. Removing about half a TB of photographs probably IS the answer! It’s my own fault. I have a lot of pictures — like 150,000 of them.

  5. They will probably show up where you least expect them.
