“A tree is our most intimate contact with nature.”

Attean Way (Jackman, Maine) in late afternoon with light on the autumn woods and mountains across the lake

  1. I love post about squirrels and nature!

  2. wow Marilyn – what stunning squares. The light is magical in both, and the squares really encapsulate the quote

    • Thank you. These count among my favorite pictures. They aren’t the highest quality I ever took (at least not the one taken in Maine), but the view was breathtaking. I probably needed a wide angle lens to get the full effect of that woods, but the problem was wires. On both sides, there were heavy electrical wires and I had to shoot between them — and that meant using my non-interchangeable lens camera which, while it had a really good lens, didn’t have the depth that a wide angle has. Also, we were in Maine and it was the only camera I had brought with me. Suffice to say it was a view that was amazing. Every tree was glowing from the front to the mountains way in the back. I couldn’t capture it but at least I got to see it!

The squirrel was just in the right place at the right time. She was a sweet thing 🙂

  3. Beautiful lighting in both photos – the backlighting of the squirrel’s ears and whiskers, and the rays of light in the sky in the second shot 😀

    • Thank you so much!

Great light can make great pictures. So much is luck and having the right lens on the camera. We went back to Attean Way at least four times trying to get the light right. It was either right in our faces or just at the wrong angle. We finally got it, but we had to work for it. As for the squirrel, I was lucky. It was early in the morning and the sun was behind him, so it made him light up.

  4. The squirrel photo is beautiful, Marilyn. Look at the lighting on his little ears!

  5. Heaven(ly views)
That squirrel… I lack the words
    That landscape!

    • It was an amazing view of an unspoiled valley — and that squirrel is just ridiculously cute. She also had a nest in that tree. That’s why she was always sitting in that spot. She had babies she was guarding.

  6. Adorable. What a wonderful capture of the squirrel in the tree!!!!!! And the Maine shot looks like a painting.

    • That squirrel was a mommy and she was guarding her nest. I didn’t know that until later when I actually could see the nest, but it explained why she spent so much time sitting there.

As for the shot in Maine, it was actually even more spectacular. It was impossible to get the colors of the trees in the front of the pictures AND the colors in the back — probably having to do with the optics of the lens. That was as good as I was able to get, but it looked like a painting. Jackman is a very small town with some very good skiing in the area, but it is very far from anywhere (unless you live in Maine) — and a LONG drive up mountains. Driving down can be fun if you have nerves of steel. No guard rails. Just the edges of mountains and knowing if you fall into one, they won’t even find your carcass until they notice the bears chomping on you.

It really IS spectacular. I miss going there, but it is such a long ride these days. I have to live through the photographs.
