A Must See Oddball Shop Right on the Highway

I have, over the years, owned many dolls. Hundreds of dolls — but I’ve never had quite THIS many dolls, at least not all at the same time.

What’s Odd Today atCee’s Oddball Challenge?

Have you ever opened the door to a shop and it took your breath away, it was so …. odd?

My friend Sally Pace and I got in her car and drove east on Highway 198 toward the big trees, Sequoia National Park. Our mission, as we chose to accept it, was selling advertising for Kiwanis magazine, “What’s Happening in the Foothills.”

We’re volunteers, you know.

You can’t keep a volunteer on the straight path without them turning their work into an event.

“Hey, Sally, look here. The Doll’s Nest. Ever been there?”

“It looks like someone’s house.”

“Let’s check it out anyway. If they’re not there, oh well.”

We almost did not open the door. It WAS someone’s house. We heard a little voice inside, “It’s open. Come on in.”

We pushed open the door and sucked in our breath.

Seriously, have you ever seen so many dolls.

  1. Christmas, and I finally saw a set of Russian dolls I could afford.
I’ve always liked them and unknown to me, my wife had always wanted a set.

  2. Thanks Marilyn, I did enjoy this post and reblogged the original on our doll blog. The last time I saw so many nesting dolls together was when we visited the USSR in 1990. I remember seeing many stalls selling them. I bought some for Naomi and for a workmate who wanted some but stupidly I didn’t buy one for myself. Something I always regret because they were much nicer than the ones I used to see on sale in Adelaide. I remember seeing them with political figures, like Gorbachev and Maggie Thatcher, Reagan was probably in there too.
Doll shops just don’t seem to be around anymore. When we were first collecting there was a good one in an Adelaide suburb that we used to visit. It was before eBay really got going and many of our first dolls came from there.

    • I have one set I bought at a craft sale. It’s very traditional and beautifully painted. But these days, I just want someone to take most of this stuff away and give it a safe home.

I ran a doll hospital for a while. It wasn’t an official doll hospital, but I had a lot of customers who collected old dolls, so if they needed help and I could give it, I helped. I still have all the tools and haven’t had the heart to get rid of them, especially because all that stuff is really expensive.

Life is awfully discouraging right now and not just for me. We are, for a variety of reasons, totally bummed.
