Downy and Hairy woodpeckers come to feed on the suet. I have photos both in one picture. This Hairy male has been working over the tree that shades our deck. It’s got some kind of boring insect problem. The woodpeckers have done their best to get those bugs, but the tree is dying. Slowly and for that kind of tree, it’s on the old side. I’m not bothered by taking it down. It has looked like a dying tree for a few years already.
I don’t know how much of it will cost. It looks bad enough to make me wonder if it will come alive this year. It might not.
It’s going to be expensive to have it cut down. You can’t get a truck in there. It’s impassible. This is a big tree and needs a pro. But expensive. Very.
I’m really pleased with how this came out. I’m working on a couple of Goldfinch. Tomorrow, I hope.

Yeah, I’m thinking that tiny Woodpecker we see here is the Hairy guy. It’s the smallest Woodpecker I’ve ever seen. He’s hanging out with the Chickadees looking for birdseed and sunflower seeds from us humans passing by. Really hard for me to get a good photo of him. But he’s charming to be sure.

The Downy looks almost exactly the same, but is about half the size of this one. So what you are seeing probably the Downy Woodpecker. We get both often at the same time. Their markings are close to identical, yet they are unrelated. It’s some kind of evolutionary thing the downy played to get bigger birds to be afraid of them. Since birds are all about vision, unless they saw both of them together, a bird might not see a difference.

Awww .. thank you for that. I hope the Downy’s won’t be offended.
Rose has a bird book around here somewhere so I better do some research.
