They look like they are kissing. Really, they are quarreling. They are playing dominance games and one bird or the other should back down. Except a lot of the time, they don’t back down. They squabble, but afterward, they go back to pillaging seeds.

I think this is true of almost all birds, even doves. Some birds are pushier than others, but they definitely have a hierarchy as do cats and dogs and other animals that sometimes form groups.

That is exactly what IS going on. It looks like play, but it’s always the birdy game of “king of the mountain.”
