Thanks Cee. I was astonished that they are growing oranges BIGGER than grapefruit. Not necessarily better, but bigger.

I love this time of year. It’s the only time we get REALLY fresh fruit. In the winter, we get whatever is leftover from Florida or California. I’m betting it won’t be much of a crop from California this year, what with the water shortage.

Our best fruit here is apples and we won’t get them until later this month. But we have orchards everywhere. This is apple country and you can pick them yourself, of just go and buy a lot of them. Of course, with the drought, I don’t know how it will work out. We’ll know soon. It’s that time of year again! Oh, and soon PUMPKINS.

I can’t eat the skins anymore, but I do love apple pie and apple crumble too. And we have an apple peeling thingie. It’s not electric, but it peels, cores, and slices the apples. It takes the agony out of apple baking.

Just so you see what it looks like. Apparently they’ve been around for more than 100 years. Takes a LOT of work out of apple preparation.

It’s a very cool instrument — and it works. We got a slightly heavier one that cost a bit more (but not much more) and it has been coring, peeling, and slicing apples for years. Amazing and it works without using electricity.

There are a lot of places that don’t have it — like Switzerland. And you can’t always order the same items in different places, either.

Lot of citrus there, we have mandarins in the fruit bowl but I didn’t photograph them.

We don’t grow citrus here. Wrong climate. We do grow LOTS AND LOTS of apples and all different kinds. We have orchards everywhere.

People have backyard lemon trees here, even we have one although it’s not in good shape. Commercial orange orchards grow better on the mainland. South Australia had quite a few along the Murray. Tasmania is more known for apples especially in the Huon Valley even though there are far fewer orchards now than even twenty years ago.

We still have many orchards, though if we don’t start to get more rain — and colder autumn weather — that will probably change. As the climate changes, crops wind up changing too, like it or not.

Yes, some say that South Australia’s main wine producing areas in the Barossa Valley and Riverland may eventually become too hot to grow grapes. In Tasmania we have vineyards too which produce cool climate wines but these may have to change the type of grapes they grow.

It IS raining today. Finally. Maybe the drought is ending. Unfortunately, the problem is going away. It’s a respite, but not a “fix.”
