He was our “local” poet. I have always loved his poems, but even more since I moved to New England. He understood this place and its people. We have a portrait of him taken by Alfred Eisenstaedt hanging in our dining room. He was one of Garry’s first interviews as a Boston reporter.

This is a great picture and poem, Marilyn. What a great memory for Garry.

He doesn’t remember it very clearly. He was so new in the area and everything was new, but he remembers it enough to say that the portrait we have looks very much like he did in 1970. He remembers his Norman Rockwell interview better — which was also near the beginning of his work here. I wish I’d been on either of those interviews!

Harry had a great job, Marilyn. I know he was very good at it too.

One of my favourite poets too. We went to his grave when we visited New England some years ago.

I think much of his poetry is more true now than it seemed when he wrote it. A lot of people don’t “get” him. Maybe it helps if you live here.

I must admit I did the drawing and then realized they would work together. It was one of my “Halloween/Autumn” drawings. But yes, it sure does go well with the poem.
