ALONG OUR OWN DRIVEWAY AS AUTUMN FADES
Photos: Owen Kraus and Marilyn Armstrong
Our Japanese maple is the first tree to grow leaves in the spring and the last to lose them in the fall. It stays green as all the rest of the trees become bright red, yellow, orange and when all those leaves fall to the ground, the Japanese maple turns orange and scarlet.

He’s good at it. He’s just got so many other things going on, he forgets until I hand him a camera and say “Hey, I need pictures of the Japanese maple” and he goes out and takes pictures. And they are usually pretty good.

We raised it from a twig in a bucket, newly sprung from the earth.

My cousin-in-law raises these trees and he gave us one to take home. This is what grew from that tiny beginning.
