ROLLING TO THE END OF FEBRUARY

Share Your World 21st February

Time is still flying by. I’m sure when I turn around twice, it will be spring and one more turn and it will be summer and fall again. It’s dizzying.

We have had a winter that was not a real winter, not in any sense that I have understood winter. We had no snow and nothing froze. We had ONE very cold night after which the temperature went into the 60s. That was an 80 degree difference in less than 12 hours. Wow, right?

And now, for pictures of the happiest cardinal in all the world of cardinals:

And all those seeds for me to eat!
O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!” He chortled in his joy.

When food shopping, do you go with a list and stick to it, or buy on the hop?

We always have a list. We add things we need to the white board on the refrigerator, so whoever is shopping writes them down. However, there are always things we forgot to write down or are on sale and we do a lot of substituting, depending on what’s available, what looks good. We don’t order a lot of food because we all like picking our own fruits and veggies, but we will order from whole foods because their fruit is always good.

When clothes shopping, do you prefer to shop in a store or buy mail order?

I buy most of my clothing and Garry’s online, though they’ve recently opened an L.L. Bean store in our local mall — so that may be a fall back position. I don’t buy clothing on Amazon unless I recognize the brand. I am not picky about a lot of things, but I’m fussy about the quality of clothing. Maybe it’s because my mother made all my clothing and I know what properly made clothing should look like. But that really cheap stuff — other than jeans? I won’t buy it. The seams aren’t properly finished and they use cheap thread that melts when you wash it.

Do you like shopping for shoes?

I hate shopping for shoes. Nothing ever fits. It wasn’t always quite this difficult, but the padding under my feet has more or less disappeared, so I need better padding in shoes — and mainly, I would just as soon not wear shoes at all. In the house, I wear socks instead of shoes.

I used to know that Clark’s sandals would fit, but they changed where they make their shoes — probably now it’s China or Vietnam like everyone else. They are now suddenly too narrow. I use Zappos because (even before they became a subsidiary of Amazon) they were great about returns.

Do you enjoy shopping alone or with friends/partner?

Alone, thank you. I have zero patience with waiting for people who wander around — or take forever to find one pair of shorts. I spent months of my life standing around wondering where whoever I was shopping with had gone. I hated it. Now, I don’t have to do it and thus, I don’t do it.

  1. Yeah, Time definitely does move faster as you get older. At the moment the only good thing I can think of about Time is that February (often our worst Winter month) is half over. But as you say, it will all be around again faster than we can blink.

“Shopping”? I never used to have a list, but now …
    “Clothes”? Don’t trust Mail Order.
“Like Shopping for Shoes”?? My foot!
“Shopping with friends/partner”? NO! ……. LoL!!

    • Well, the good thing about mail order shoes is they WILL take them back and they never charge you for returning them, either. Especially Zappos are really excellent and they have every possible size, which for my son who wears a size 14 or 15 (depending on cut) is a life saver because NO ONE has his size in the store.

  2. Lovely pictures of the cardinal Marilyn. Thanks for joining in this week. I know what you mean about cheap thread and things not being finished properly………. one wash and it all unravels!

  3. I will skip over the shopping part, as I hate shopping. I love those lovely red cardinals and wish we had them here in UK!

    • There was a time, many moons ago, when I actually enjoyed shopping, but I was young and foolish. Even then, I shopped alone.

When I acquired a family, I started to hate shopping and the more family I acquired, the more I hated it. First catalogs, then online really improved my shopping experience. I am SO glad to not have to haul my butt around a mall. For one thing, malls are HUGE and by the time I get from one end to the other — and the stores I want are ALWAYS at opposite ends of the mall — I’m too tired to care. Then, there’s parking. No, thanks. Shopping from my computer is just fine.
