WEDNESDAY IS PODCAST DAY

Our guest postponed for a week — family obligations and grandchildren. But Garry and Tom were in fine fettle.

This time, I turned off the clocks the night before so I wouldn’t forget. We had to put the Duke outside because the moment we got ready to record, he went into extreme crazy mode. He seems to be trying to tell us something. I think he is telling us our neighbors have a dog. He considers their dog as a trespass on our land, even though they are not on our land and their dog never bothers anyone. I haven’t figured out if he is protecting us from their dog — who is very big who could eat the Duke in one big bite — or he wants to play. I don’t think it’s play and anyhow, you can’t record a podcast with an insane dog zooming around the house while in a barking frenzy. I was glad it wasn’t raining because I won’t put him out in the rain, so I’d have to lock him in our bedroom which holds the potential for catastrophe.

I actually took some pictures. I tried to get Tom into the picture, but he was (this is not racist, really) he was too white and he looked like a white blur. I got one screen shot where you can almost see Tom, but you definitely can see Garry and me, as the photographer reflected in the glass.

If you are using an iPad or a laptop, you can click on one of the titles in the right-hand sidebar. Or, you’ll have to wait until Sunday when I publish a post with with link in it. If you subscribe to it, you will also be able to find all the War Stories on YouTube as well as Tom’s “Get Off My Lawn” podcast. Even if you just watch the show, they will probably show up in your YouTube list. I find that everything I watch shows up.

I will have to try a wider lens next time. I was using my portrait lens which is fast and has a great bokeh. The nice fuzzy background on portraits is called a “bokeh” (pronounced like “bouquet”) which is a Japanese word. There is no English word for that soft optical background, but it’s what makes a portrait lens special.

If we ever manage to coordinate a personal visit to Connecticut — it would help if winter would actually end! — I will try to take pictures of Tom and Garry together, physically, in one picture. Isn’t that an exciting idea?

So now you can see what our podcast studio looks like. Basically, it’s my Mac Airbook, a microphone and headphones — with silenced clocks and the Duke of Uxbridge outside where he can bark to his heart’s content.

More on Sunday when Part 3 of WAR STORIES: BEHIND THE SCENES STORIES FROM THE FRONT LINES OF MEDIA arrives in your inbox! Stay tuned!

  1. Hey, Tom, I think we better address the “White Blur” thing. Sounds blatantly racist. I think I looked “very dark” on the podcast. I know a lawyer.

  3. I don’t know if Tom and Garry realize that that mic is a “side address” mic. In the pic Garry seems to be speaking into the top of it.., I’m just sayin’?

    • Tell me what that means. I’m pretty sure that Tom told Garry to just put the mic as close as possible. I had it on the side, but he told me to move it. I’m not sure what a side address mic is. More accurate, the mic is off to his right, not directly in front of him, so it is more or less off the the side because there wasn’t anywhere else to put it. You can write me privately about this. We are getting pretty good sound with it although for some weird reason, it wouldn’t connect to Tom for a few minutes until I rebooted everything — then it all worked.

      • The “on axis”orientation is to speak into it from its side, not down from the top. Tom knows what I’m talking’ about. It doesn’t matter where the mic is placed as long as the “side” is pointed perpendicular to his mouth. That will place it in the best position for the best pick up for articulation of Garry’s voice. Trust me I’ve gone through this many, many times, and so has Tommy. This is just one of those little detailed adjustments making it easier, as this thing moves along.

      • You’re no rookie my friend, just never had to do your own tech. You guys are now miles apart so you gotta learn just, in the words of Colombo, one more thing sir. Feels good that you guys are doing own your thing, and together at that. I viewed a little of the first podcast and seems your energy is up and there’s a light in your eyes. GO GUYS!

  4. Witty running commentary to an upcoming podcast. With authentic background barking and growling of Duke of Uxbridge. Should be good! 🙂

    • Hey, I think I managed to DELETE the chiming of the clocks and the frenzy of the Duke. The pictures would have been better had the day not been so overcast. It was almost like night outside which is WHY I used that lens. It’s a very good little lens — and it works well in dimly lit rooms. Which is our entire house most of the time. We have the least sunny house I’ve ever lived in. It’s all the trees. We are in constant shade. Come to think of it, the house I grew up in was ALSO in constant shade. Hmm. I think I may have found a secret link to why I really like this house.

    • Kiki, I think the Duke of Uxbridge is pushing for an invite to join the podcast. He’s probably told the other dogs about the show. Maybe our people will talk to Duke’s people.
