All winter, the goldfinch are a dull shade of olive and sometimes, downright beige. As summer arrives, they begin to morph into the bright yellow goldfinch we love. This year, they are changing about a month early. I’m just happy they have returned.

This little just past fledgling goldfinch is changing from drab to rich yellow.

Beautiful photos, and I can imagine the beauty of his song!

Goldfinch sound exactly like you think they ought to sound. Little happy trills in the spring and summer breeze.

Okay, I couldn’t hear the goldfinch but that’s my problem. This closeup is wonderful – almost Currier and Ives. You could use it as the visual for a musical card.

So beautiful! But very different from our goldfinches (https://www.rspb.org.uk/birds-and-wildlife/wildlife-guides/bird-a-z/goldfinch/)

Yes, one of my favourites among our garden birds. We only get them in our garden occasionally but my parents, who lived further out of London and had a much bigger garden, used to see them a lot 🙂

I think all kinds of finch are “flock” birds. They like hanging out in groups.

They are little rays of sunshine 😀 And this time of year, because they are recently hatched, we get a lot of them, at least for a few weeks.

Beautiful photos, Marilyn. How do the finches act at the feeder with the other birds?

They are very friendly, but they aren’t fighters. If the other birds get pushy, they fly away.

When we need to get the squirrels, doves, and cowbirds to “move on,” we send the Duke out on the deck and with a little encouragement, he barks at them. Then he comes in and asks for a treat.
