Not only do I think this is the most adorable squirrel I’ve ever seen, but he (she?) is probably the tiniest. He must be a baby because he wasn’t even as big as a chipmunk and they are pretty small. His colors are unique.

Though clearly a red squirrel — the white ring around his eye is a giveaway as his the white tummy and the tight curl of his tail — but this little guy has a grey head. And a black stripe in his tail. I’ve never seen a squirrel that looks quite like this little fellow. He’s an original!

We don’t get to see many of these cute little fellows where I live, so good to see this one!

Red squirrels are not nearly as common as the big grey squirrels — or other big ones in other regions. Mostly, the big ones out-eat the littler ones. But because there is a lot of food in this area between the natural food in the woods, fields and gardens — and all the people who feed birds and squirrels (not every bird feeder is anti-squirrel!) — the little red squirrels have thrived. Given equal opportunity food, they can ALL thrive. It’s when we cut down their woods that the battle to survives gets ugly.

This theory applies to us as well, Marilyn. I suppose we will have to wait until we’re pronounced endangered too…

Those little red ones are really cute. REALLY cute. I always want to just hug them — except for the minor detail that they are tough little critters and they will bite!

Like our possums. So cute but they would’t like being hugged and probably have fleas to boot.

He’s so sweet! He looks like he’s smiling 🙂

I like to think they ARE smiling because I smile at them, so they have learened to smile back. This is probably a fantasy, but I want to believe it.
