MY FRIEND IN BLACK AND WHITE

CEE’S BLACK & WHITE PHOTO CHALLENGE: HEADS OR FACIAL FEATURES

Cee’s challenge this week is for faces. Being at my friend’s house and her being uncharacteristically willing to let me take her picture, voilà! Taken with my new 60mm Olympus macro/portrait lens using the camera’s art effects and of course, Photoshop.

MORNING LIGHT, PORCELAIN AND SHADOW

Cee’s Black & White Photo Challenge:

Bathrooms and Outhouses

I do not have any pictures of outhouses, not exterior or worse, from the inside. I haven’t seen or used one of those dreadful places in many years. I consider it a triumph.

Indoor plumbing is one of the unequivocal improvements in modern human living. I have absolutely not the slightest desire to ever use an outhouse again.

Smelly, dank, dark, and full of spiders. Sometimes full of other unspeakable things. If you have ever had to use an outhouse in the middle of the night, you know exactly what I mean. {Shiver}

On the other hand, the light coming in both bathroom windows on the east side of the house, is the best light of the day.

I take many photographs from those windows. I sometimes can’t resist taking a picture of the room itself in that early morning light.

TELEVISION STUDIO IN LIVING BLACK AND WHITE

Cee’s Black & White Photo Challenge: Any kind of Camera or Photos of Photographers

This week’s topic is Any kind of Camera or Photos of Photographers. Any camera from a SLR, DSLR, iPhone, vintage camera, lenses, obvious camera equipment. Also allowed in this challenge is people taking photos.

This was an actual TV show in progress. The pictures were almost sepia because of the color cast of the studio lighting. In a couple, I used some antique effects. I really love the way TV cameras look, the big, unblinking eye.

IN THE KITCHEN – CEE’S BLACK-AND-WHITE PHOTO CHALLENGE

What a great challenge this is. I love taking pictures in the kitchen. There is so much stuff in a kitchen … so much going on.

So many textures and moods. I have taken a lot of my favorite photographs in the kitchen, usually in the morning when its east-facing windows catch the light. I was happy to take this today. Because the sun is shining.

SEATING – CEE’S BLACK AND WHITE PHOTO CHALLENGE

Cee’s Black & White Photo Challenge: Table and Chairs, seating of any kind

Seating isn’t always chairs or benches. It can be the ground, a rock, the curb. The stairs. However, for the purposes of this challenge, I stayed with traditional places to park a human butt. Mostly chairs and one sofa, though you’d have to move one of the camera bags before settling down. Why, you may ask, do you keep all your cameras on the sofa? Is it so they will be right at hand when you need them?

Having them handy has been an unexpected bonus, but the reason is to keep the big hairy dog off the sofa. We tried everything else. For some reason, he’s wary of the camera bags. Shape? Size? No idea.

Do I feel guilty because we don’t let the our Australian Shepherd with the heaviest coat in the world have the sofa as his personal bed? Not really. If we were rich, we would buy him his own sofa, but he can’t have ours. He will have to settle for blankets on the floor. Sorry big fella. Sometimes, the humans win.

Garry gets the last word on seating. Because you can sit anywhere. This lady and her dog chose the beach at Barnstable at sunset. It’s the best seating of all.

BLACK AND WHITE ROADSCAPES

Cee’s Black & White Photo Challenge: Roadscapes

City and country, most of us seem to spend a lot of time in cars. On the road is a common place to find oneself, especially during vacation months.

Some of these were taken through the windshield, others on the streets of Boston or other places in New England.

BARNS AND BARK: CEE’S BLACK & WHITE PHOTO CHALLENGE

Cee’s Black & White Photo Challenge: Wood

Old barns and old trees have the most interesting wood and wood bark. As wood weathers, it gains character. The old barn in some of these pictures was all about the wood … and the old handmade windows. The trees are all about their bark. I thought at least one of these looks like an Ent. Maybe you can guess which one.

THE WEATHER OUTSIDE IS FRIGHTFUL – IN BLACK AND WHITE

Cee’s Black & White Photo Challenge: Weather

The weather outside really is frightful. It’s below zero with a wind chill that makes it worse. I’m not sure how much worse. Tomorrow? Some snow, of course. This is January in New England. We have weather. Lots and lots of it.

dark cemetary

Weather is a particularly good subject for black and white. Cloud formations, snow, and ice are naturals in monochrome. Even a sunrise can look smashing in monochrome.

Living in New England, we have a lot of all of different kinds of weather. And if you don’t like the weather right now? Wait a minute …

CIRCLES AND CURVES IN BLACK AND WHITE

Cee’s Black & White Photo Challenge: Circles and Curves

BW medicine wheel

In nature, in architecture, geometry lives. This week, it’s circles and curves.

This is natural monochrome, not added as processing. It's the way it came out of the camera.

The circle of the moon, the arch on a doorway. The curve or a hip, or a smile.

The curve of the road, as it goes ever onward … the design in the walkway. Nothing is a straight line because the earth is round. Almost round. Slightly elliptical, actually.

Cee’s Black & White Photo Challenge: Open Topic

One of the big pluses of our annual trip to the Boston Pops is my one and only chance to get some night shots of Boston.

72-BW-Boston-Night_009

This area is called “symphony,” and is the musical center of the city. Berklee College of Music and Symphony Hall are here.

The Tee stop is the Symphony stop. It’s an old and beautiful part of town.
