Not only has this been a particularly beautiful Autumn, but it has lasted longer than any in my memory. It started in September … earlier than normal … and it has not quite left us yet.
On our way back from the mall in Millbury, we left Route 146 via Lackey Dam road and when we got to the pond, Marilyn spotted a flash of white. A swan!
I found a place to pull of the road and we took our cameras and walked the short path to the pond. The leaves were russet and red, the sky bright blue. Reflections were perfect mirrors of the sky with crisp leave floating like boats across the surface.
It was a John Ford afternoon. I could hear the music softly in the distance …

Beautiful Garry. I’m glau had a long autumn because you guys deserve it after last winter beating. Here in Oregon our autumn lasted about two minutes. We had a nice late summer and then right into winter. 🙂

Beautiful, especially the one with the swan, which has me wondering, why do geese fly south for the winter but swans don’t? Or, is this swan just late in its departure?

I’ll take that one. Geese theoretically migrate but in recent years, most of them have chosen to hang around through the winter. You’d have to ask them why. Swans have never been migratory, nor are the ducks. They move in and stay. Perfect tenants.

I love these reflections, it is nice when autumn stretches out as so often it’s gone before you have really had time to enjoy it.

Usually we have the remnants of a hurricane — wind gone, but rain a’plenty — plow through and strip the trees. It was nice that this year, it didn’t happen that way 🙂

What a lovely experience–and I loved that you call it a John Ford afternoon! Great pictures…this is also a coincidence, because I was just out taking pictures today, thinking–I can’t believe we still have such great autumn color! Even after a deep freeze, an ice storm, and high winds, there are still some beautiful autumn leaves here to enjoy.

My eyes felt like John Ford’s eyes, including the patch. I guess Pappy’s soul was with me. I wasn’t sure if the pictures would be any good. Thank you!
