SUNNY DAY – OCTOBER 2023

Festival of Leaves 2023: Week # 4 ~ Sunny Day in October

Photography: Garry Armstrong

All of these pictures were taken by Garry in town or down by the Blackstone canal.

And this is the Blackstone River and Canal in Uxbridge.

And finally, this is me and the foliage by the Canal on a bright day in early October.

This display shows why I sign pictures. Sometimes, I get lazy — or my wrist hurts and I don’t want to make the extra effort — and I skip signing them. But when I do, everyone assumes that Marilyn took the pictures even though she (me) didn’t.

A note on signing photographs:

Signing pictures is an identifier. Three people in this house take pictures. Owen occasionally, Garry pretty regularly, and me. If I do not sign them, I don’t know who took them. Especially between me and Garry since we inevitably are shooting in the same area. Unless I’m in the picture (a good giveaway), I can’t be sure who took it. We use the same cameras and lenses. For those of you who seem to feel that signing one’s photos is some narcissistic exercise in branding, I don’t think it ever is. I would sign a book or a poem I wrote and no one would think anything of it. Why is a photograph different? In a household with multiple people taking pictures, it’s closer to a necessity.

  2. I completely understand why you sign your photos, especially as you post both yours and Garry’s on this blog. There’s no need for my husband and I to do it – our photographic styles are so different these days that we almost always know instantly who took which photo! And we very rarely post them together, although occasionally I’ll make use of one of his (with his permission!)

What I’m less convinced by is when people say they are doing it to protect their copyright, as it’s so easy with software to remove a watermark, especially when close to the edges. And if you put it somewhere in the middle it ruins the photo, imho. That’s why I never bother personally.

    • This is my best identifier for who took what. Garry has a unique style for some things — people, mostly — but when we get into landscapes, we take pretty much identical pictures. Part of why is where you have to stand to GET the pictures. Between the river, the rocks, the fences et al, we have to stand in the same place when we shoot. The main different is usually that my telephoto is longer than his so I can get closer.

    • That is MY theory. Why NOT sign ones photos? Okay, if I can’t find a place to put a signature where it won’t ruin the photos, I won’t sign it, but otherwise? It’s my photo. I know people are going to steal them, so at least I try to put something on it that says “Hey, this is mine.” But nothing stops the thieves.
