IF I RULED THE WORLD

A New Song To Sing, by Rich Paschall

Another Spring is here. Consider if you lived 103 years there would only be 103 Springs to enjoy, so why not enjoy each one to the fullest. Celebrate the first day of Spring with the following Spring tunes.

If I ruled the world,
Every day would be the first day of spring,
Every heart would have a new song to sing,
And we’d sing of the joy every morning would bring.

We know you have been in a “Spring Haze” for a year, but you “Can’t Stop The Spring.” We decided you needed some Springtime music since we knew “The Hearts Were Full Of Spring.” After last year you may have asked, “Where Did My Spring Go?” I was watching the news and “They Say It’s Spring.” So I brought you ten songs for the season.

10. Spring Fever, Elvis. The King of Rock and Roll may have been a bit “Girl Happy” when he went out on this spring break. The 1964 song was part of a movie soundtrack.
09. Southland in the Springtime, Indigo Girls.  “And there’s something bout the Southland in the springtime,” according to the Indigo Girls in this 1990 country hit.
08. Spring Affair, Donna Summer.  The Queen of Sultry Disco wrote this as part of a concept album, Four Seasons of Love. The song ran 8 minutes, so you get the radio edit here.
07. Late Winter, Early Spring, John Denver. The folk singer shifted gears for side two of the Rocky Mountain High album in 1972. This instrumental is part of the Season Suite.
06. Spring in Manhattan, Tony Bennett. After that soft mood music, it is time for some Jazz and we know you are ready for more Tony Bennett. This one was originally recorded in 1963.

05. Spring Can Really Hang You Up The Most, Ella Fitzgerald. Since we are on a jazz break, we will add this one recorded by Fitzgerald in 1961.

04. You Must Believe in Spring, Tony Bennett. Mr. Bennett returns for an encore with the Composer of this tune, Michel Legrand. French lyrics by Jacques Demy, English lyrics by Marilyn and Alan Bergman.

03. It Might As Well Be Spring, Frank Sinatra. If it is not Spring where you are, it might as well be according to Sinatra in the Rogers and Hammerstein tune. The song was written for the musical State Fair.

02. Spring Vacation, The Beach Boys. The “boys” were still taking Spring vacations when they released this tune in 2012 for their 50th-anniversary tour. The song was written by Brian Wilson, Mike Love, and Joe Thomas.

01. Spring Breakdown, Luke Bryan. It looks like you need something uptempo and country star Luke Bryan will provide it in this song from the 2015 Spring Break…Checkin’ Out album.

“The variegated verdure of the fields and woods, the succession of grateful odours, the voice of pleasure pouring out its notes on every side, with the gladness apparently conceived by every animal, from the growth of his food, and the clemency of the weather, throw over the whole earth an air of gaiety, significantly expressed by the smile of nature.”  – A Meditation on Spring, Samuel Johnson
