THE BEST OF TIMES

We’ve been on a roll these past few days, the “angst mojo” temporarily set aside.

Now, we’re home, after spending a couple of wonderful days in Connecticut with old friends, sharing memories that date back to college and the 60’s when we and our world were young.

Ellin and Tom are special folks. Ellin gets top billing because she’s so quiet and often taken for granted.

She is the hostess — no matter what else she is coping with in her family life. She’s the woman you thought only existed in the movies or those old TV shows where everything is seemingly perfect.

Ellin is multi-talented. Superb cook, budding author, wife and mom. She’s humble about all her achievements. Amazing when she is surrounded by two guys with 80 plus years combined in radio and TV news. Guys who are often nonstop with their stories about the BIZ. Ellin and Marilyn have a special bond in that respect.

Gracious, I think, is the best word to describe Ellin. Like us, she and Tom always have furry kids around who brighten their lives. It’s nice to visit and come back with fur on our clothing. Makes it seem just like home.

Tom is the kid  who never grew up. We’ve known him since JFK was in the oval office. He is recently retired after 40 years as a highly respected director and audio expert with CBS News.

He’s still active, producing and directing cracker jack (does anyone say that anymore?) radio drama. Tom and Ellin actually are an impressive acting, writing and jack-of-all-trades team in radio drama that deserves a wider audience. Their work is far superior to the stuff being offered by network suits.

A day on Tom and Ellin’s boat is just what the doctor ordered for Marilyn and me. It’s a perfect day. Sunny, warm and with just a slight breeze. Surprise! Ellin has a lunch spread ready before we can settle in.

It allows me to fantasize as I survey other boats. Maybe we’ll see Bogey on Santana, Travis McGee and The Busted Flush, Slate Shannon with Bold Venture or maybe Grant and Hepburn on  True Love. Who knows what can happen as you dream?

My reverie is interrupted as Tom shares some more stories that have all of us roaring with laughter. In between we compare family drama that have us nodding at each other.

Then it’s back to more silliness and laughter. These are the best of times.

  1. I was just wondering who would be looking after your furry kids while you were away from home. May be your grand daughter. It was indeed a great day with your friends. Nothing to beat the warmth and love you get when you are surounded with the ones who are just like you. Lovely post.

  2. A lovely post. I grew up with radio drama – our TV didn’t start until 6 PM and the housewives wouldn’t go out of the house until they had heard their stories on the radio. Great photos.

    • I grew up with radio drama too, though it was the very end of it and television replaced it by the time I started school. But the new stuff is mostly kind of awful. Terribly written and amateurish. Embarrassingly bad. The stuff Tom and Ellin are doing is really good and I didn’t have to pretend to like it. It was entertaining. Funny. Smart. I’ll try to get Tom to send me links to it.

    • I also grew up with radio drama. It fueled my imagination long before we had television. Thanks, Raewyn.

  4. You make me nostalgic for old friends–especially two who for years lived on a boat that sailed all over the world and kept asking us to visit. We never did. Then a year ago they ended up visiting me and liked it so much they bought a house here in Mexico. They now live only 4 miles away from me…although they are splitting their time until their house in the states sells. Thanks for sharing your good times, Garry.

    • Thank you! Neither Marilyn or I have many friends between us these days. So, we cherish people like Ellin and Tom.

      • Nothing like those who knew us as we were–if for no other reason than to stand behind our stories! Ha. I think I’ll get sworn statements from the friends and relatives still living that they were there and can testify that some of my stories that are a bit hard to believe actually did happen as told.

  7. Wonderful to spend time with friends like that. Wonderful on so many levels- shared history, things in common and just good people. (and food from the sounds of it!) Love the photos

  8. We have a little ’76 Mercury Sport Fury tri-hull that we take out on the lake every now and then… there’s nothing quite like being out on the water for a few hours… we might be able to upgrade to something similar to Tom and Ellin’s beauty when we retire! lol Great photos!

  9. I don’t know Ellin, but I do remember Tommy, a skinny guy with more hair than body. Boy have we all changed over the years in ways we swore we’d never. Sounds like it was a great holiday. Please say hello to Tommy, for me, when next you speak with him.

    • Tom still has more hair than anyone his age ought. More than you and Garry and maybe me combined.

No one is skinny except Garry. We DID talk about you (you are well-remembered), especially when we were talking about recording radio drama.

    • Ben, we more than said “hello” from you to Tom. We brought him up to speed on our on-going friendship with you. Tom says “Hi!” back right at you. Hey, Ben, you got a boat?
