Let’s hear it for all of us who never even tried to be fashionable. When young, I wanted to look like Joan Baez. So I bought all my clothing in Greenwich Village and continued to buy the same stuff from the same places until I became a mommy and didn’t have the time to go there. After that, I replicated the styles via Macy’s or other mall stores.
As I got older, there was always L.L. Bean and Land’s End. Their catalogs were my fallback position. I could usually count on finding A-line skirts and round-toed shoes. And turtlenecks. In black, taupe, gray, navy, and occasionally, mauve. Jeans were always good for between work and later, at work because eventually, you could wear anything to work and no one cared.
I still wear basically the same stuff, though yoga pants substitute for jeans. Once you go stretchy, you’ll never go back! Long, loose dresses because I have a stupid itchy rash and often can’t wear any elastic at all.
Fashion statement? Me? Visit “Chicos” for special occasions (three sizes fit all). There’s always a wedding, funeral, or some kind of reunion. Now and then, I have to attend.
What’s best about my total lack of fashion is that periodically, I’m in style. I wear what I wear, but fashion changes. Some years, I’m “IN.” (This isn’t one of them.)
And now … I have to pack up some stuff ’cause we’re on our way to visit friends. See you all on the other side!
Fashion and dogs? Time really flies when you’re having fun.

I think you’re straight up attitude about the clothes you choose makes you an automatic “It-Girl.” Keep wearing what you want to wear! ❤

I really think the dogs were our final conversion to total lack of fashion. Our lives involve mostly clothing to which dog hair doesn’t stick or which washes easily. Fashion and dogs? Not a good combo 😀

I agree! I feel like my life revolves around buying clothes, wearing clothes, playing with my dogs, and then rolling my clothes. Its a never ending cycle!

Meh, “fashion” is what you feel comfortable in. If you feel comfortable in a potato sack you’ll have the confidence to pull it off. Yes, there are trends, but ignoring them demand attention. You’ll never see influencers such as Grace Coddington, Iris Apfel or Karl Lagerfeld wearing a trend. They wear what they want to wear, and it shows.

I’ve actually noticed that. Fashion designers don’t wear “the latest style.” They wear whatever they like. I haven’t actually known many people who were really fashionable, unless you count teenagers who have specific teenage fashion issues.

No, trends are for the masses. If you watch closely, something comes out one season, then all the “high end” designers do it, and a year later it’s trickled down to the Zara & H&Ms of our cities, making it available to us. It’s a big money maker, but are you going to look at the 20 girls wearing a black choker (that, let’s be honest, was trend 15 years ago) or that other girl that’s decided to take the very same choker and wear it as a band in her hair? It’s that girl they’ll write about in their blogs and whatnot 😉

Mom always said “hold on to everything, it’ll be back” and for the most part, except for some really extreme stuff, she has been right. We spend so much time hanging out with dogs, it doesn’t much matter what we wear. The dogs certainly don’t care!

I never pay any attention to what is in style but wear what I feel I look best in–usually what makes me feel skinniest!!! Bright colors, loose fit, comfy shoes. Earrings and bracelets (way too many as I wear the same ones over and over.) That’s about it.

Sounds perfect to me. Except that I tend to mostly neutral with dashes of red … but that leaves a lot of room to wear jewelry. I do love the beads and bangles.

My one and, yes, obsessive “must” in retirement..my jeans (my “good” jeans) must be ironed with creases.
Those creases must be sharp.
I can hear you whispering about me…..

Ha!!! Remember when they just sewed those creases in?

Heresy!! Ya gotta do it with an iron, sprinkling on some water to stiffen the creases.

I knew you’d say that. Just had to stir. I mostly remember the smell of ironing when that shot of steam came out, or prior to that, when my mom sprinkled the water on the white cotton or blue denim and then pressed the iron to it. She used to do this with her hand.. dip fingers in the water and shake them over the cloth. Later I think she used a 7-Up bottle with a stopper plug with perforations in it. And later it was me doing the ironing, as well. Ha.

I’ve worn basic, boring clothing since I was in high school. I don’t think I’ve ever been or ever will be in fashion. But my little clump of facial hair under my lip…. that has come in and out of fashion several times in the 21 years I’ve had it now. That’s about as modern as I get…

It’s comforting to know that most of the people I like are a totally non-stylish as I am. I am not built for fashion. Too short and too round. And mostly much too poor.

Don’t blame you for wanting to look like Joan Baez. With long or short hair she rocks. Also, fashion comes and goes. My daughters like stuff I wore in the 80s. I should have kept my old high waisted jeans and velvety tops. There are a hit this fall. Now, I finally know what makes me feel good, so it’s much easier than following what the fashion dictates. One thing I like as I get a little older is to appreciate each other woman’s own style.
There are no rules, really, just to find what each of us likes and wears with confidence.

And being fashionable seems to be less of a mandate for women than it was years ago. I remember pointy shoes and women having their little toes amputated so they could fit into them. We have made progress since then … I hope!

I’ve had a long time crush on Joan Baez. First saw her at a New Jersey Concert (Mosque Theater) in ’59 or ’60. Almost took my breath away. She was doing songs from her FIRST album. We recently watched her 75th Birthday concert. She still looks good. As long as Joan sings, everything is wonderful. When she speaks about social issues or anything of importance, all bets are off.
Kumbya, my Lord, Kumbya….

I admire those with the guts to wear what they want, not what fashion trends dictate. Comfort is a must now, along with comfortable shoes. Some fashion trends should never be revisited, under no circumstances, ever. Those trends belong in the past. But unfortunately they seem to come back in cycles

I don’t think there was much in the way guts required. I totally hate anything that isn’t comfortable. Hate tight clothing, short skirts, and shoes that give me blisters. I think I’m in style at the moment … but then again, I couldn’t say for sure because I haven’t looked at a fashion magazine in 30 years 🙂

god bless whomever invented yoga pants. And t shirts. And blue jeans. With the right boots and right top yoga pants can go anywhere. It ain’t what you wear, its how.
My current go-to store is the thrift shop, or Salvation Army. They almost always have something i can wear in a size I can get into, and you don’t have to spend a fortune to look as retro as you want. whatever retro happens to be at the moment.

Yoga pants are one of the great advancements of the 21st century. I don’t know how I lived without them.
Our Salvation Army store is the only clothing store in town. Otherwise, there’s Walmart (not for me, thanks) or drive 25 miles to a mall. Go Salvation Army!
