LOST YET FOUND – THE WANDERING OF MY WORDPRESS FRIENDS

This morning, when I realized that Paula’s prompt was missing, I went into “managing my reader” and discovered more than half the blogs I follow were missing. I messed around with settings and refreshing for a while — and suddenly, everyone was back.

I should have known something was wrong when I saw I was getting so few emails.

Why do I figure it isn’t me alone? If your response seems much smaller than usual, make sure you still have “your people” attached. I don’t know what they are doing, but this is getting annoying. As soon as I fix it, it’s broken again. You might want to check and see if they have hit you, too.

  1. I Went and started checking my WordPress Reader and found many of the blogs I have been following. Apparently the posts only show up there and not in my email. Now I will check the Reader more often. Good to know that these Bloggers did not just vanish into the ozone.

  2. Thanks for the warning/info Marilyn.

I had noticed a slight drop-off in visits/email reminders last week. I have also noticed that some of my followers have re-followed me from time to time while only keeping one follow in my list of followers ( they ‘move-up’ the list from when they first started following me.

Which reader ‘setting’ do you normally have show in your reader? I can choose between posts from those i follow, or those i have left ‘like’s on or ‘Discover’ general WP posts or ‘Search’ for specific tags or categories of posts to read?

Also i have noticed that my list of people i follow has 43 sites while my blog menu only shows around 20 that i follow? I have never, to my knowledge, had any problem ‘losing’ anything from you! 🙂

    • It depends. If someone posts a lot, I put them on Daily. Others go on “instant.” Weekly hardly is following at all. I would say 75% of my stuff is on “instant” and the rest, daily.

The problem with losing stuff is that you don’t know you lost it. When I disappeared, pretty much everyone figured I’d gone on vacation. This time, there was such a massive drop in traffic I went down about 60% overnight — I knew something was wrong. Sometimes, like yesterday, if you just mess around with the reader tools, it fixes itself. I kept going in and out of reader and refreshing it each time and finally, it worked. Other times, I actually have to call and ask for a technician to take a look.

This is a HUGE site with almost 6,000 posts in it, so I’m careful to take good care of it. A huge amount of work has gone into it and I don’t want to lose it!

  3. I don’t get post notifications by email, but WP does email me when I get likes on my posts (I need to find where to turn that off), and I’ve noticed there are occasional times when those don’t seem to come. And then there are times when they come in triplicate (or some higher multiple), which is really annoying.

  4. I get all of my stuff through the reader, as someone else mentioned above, since I hardly check my email, so I can’t help ya there. But I’m still having the issue where I can’t like and/or comment on anyone’s actual blog page. I have to like/comment through the reader. WordPress has always been a little weird, but hey, nothing’s perfect.

    • It’s the reader that’s screwed up. They have made the reader the way we communicate with each other and with the outside world. That’s how come I lost 3,000 followers and found them a month later. Lost most of my contacts — IN the reader — and got them back later in the day. They keep messing around with the interface. Whatever is wrong with your reader is also what’s wrong with everyone’s followers and contacts and comments and associations. It’s beginning to get on my nerves. It gets fixed then it’s broken again. Whatever they are doing, i wish they would get it fixed and stop messing with it. Putting all our eggs in that particular basket is not a great choice. Very fragile and obviously easy to break.

      • Yeah, I know something’s screwed up. If I go to your blog page I can read your blog and it looks great, but I can’t interact with anything. No likes, no comments, no replies. I have to come back to the reader and do all of that. I can’t even read any of the notifications from my own blog page. I have to be on the reader page to do that. If I try, it just sits there, doing nothing.

        • You might want to get that fixed. Because the next step is when you can’t actually do anything. If you get in touch with WordPress, they will help you. They screw up, but they also fix you when you are seriously broken. I had a similar problem and they fixed it. Took a couple of weeks, but they did it. It was like yours. It didn’t put me out of commission entirely, but it wouldn’t let me comment on some posts or reblog anything, including my own work. I still have problems reblogging, but I use PressIt, which usually works. Mostly.

  5. I must admit I rarely concentrate on my mail notifications because I get so many. I much prefer the reader to keep up to date and it works well for me.

    • Except that most of my connections were missing today, so the reader was actually what was broken. ALL of our notifications come through the reader these days. If they come by email, they also show up in the reader. If you are “following” someone (or they are following you), it all filters through the reader. When I went to look, more than half the people I expect to see were gone.

  6. I wouldn’t have found you today Marilyn without it because you weren’t showing up on Reader

  7. I’ll have to get my son to check because it’s very quiet here. Thankfully, Marilyn stuck with me and found me, otherwise I’d have had no visitors. I can’t thank you enough for that Marilyn. I’m still trying to find people like Roseeilaine who was missing until yesterday and suddenly showed up. I know there are many others. Try FVD speed dial. It’s a little program doesn’t take space and only works when you click on it. You can add your fave. url’s and instantly connect. Ive since added it because wp seems to fall apart on a regular basis.

    • You were missing from my list, so who knows where else. But if you mess with the settings on reader AND repeatedly refresh the page, that seems to help.

      • Ok, thank you, Marilyn, I’ll give it a go. Seriously, there were people I don’t know there, but no one I talk with regularly. You and Martha and Sheryl. Your the three I talk to regularly, you and Martha daily. so I would have been completely devistated if I’d lost you. yay it’s acting up again and doesn’t want to work. Hopefully you’ll get this. it keep changing what I’m typing. thinks for some reason it knows better so forgive the typos, they aren’t mien. sigh

    • More than half my own list was gone, so I’m betting that’s the problem. I just kept opening it, closing it and refreshing it. Eventually is seemed to cope. You were one of the missing and I didn’t think you hadn’t published anything 🙂 Feel better!

      • I don’t think I’ve missed a day in years. I’ve had a look and done some refreshing… it said to start with that I wasn’t following anyone! It seems to be in order now. I hope.

  9. I have a word press account, but I’ve never tried/dared/felt brave enough to use it, for just these reasons. I do follow several people and that will have to be enough for me. Blogger does pretty much the same thing from time to time, tinker tinker “we just KNOW you’ll love the changes…” (and we all know what that means) and Im left staring, wondering where my lists went….
    One blog site is enough.

  12. I never read from my e-mail, just the “Reader”, now you have me worried. What I have noticed was that some comments by readers are ending up in my spam. These are bloggers that I read all the time and had I not checked through admin, they would have thought I ignored their comment.

    • The Reader is where the mess originates. They keep changing how it works which usually means it isn’t working at all. Each time they “fix” it, we lose followers, emails, notifications, likes. And/or no one gets OUR messages. They get paid to do this. Imagine that!

  14. Ho! You’ve provided me the answer to why there was not ONE ‘reader like’ in my email. I usually get one or two comments too and today, nothing. I continue to ask the uncaring sky – WHY FIX WHAT ISN’T BROKEN??? (sorry I shouted there) The sky doesn’t answer and WordPress continues to bungle. Well I’m READING your stuff (on the WordPress SITE anyway … the notification in my email of new posts isn’t working either, apparently).

  15. Yes I’ve been one of the chosen. I was wondering why I was not receive email updates from a particular blogger so I went into my email archives where I save blogs I really like. Clicked on an old blog post of hers and viola! When I brought up her post it said Follow as opposed to Following. So once again I began Following her. I do believe WordPress is plagued by Gremlins.

    • We are plagued by WordPress’s gremlins! Whatever they are doing, I wish they would stop. It wasn’t just one missing blog, either. It was about half of them … and I wonder how many other people are missing me and you and don’t realize there’s a problem? Oy.
