ENLIGHTENING MY DAY
Coffee enlightens my day. The smell of it wafting downward in the carafe. Ah. Coffee. Yes. Good coffee.
Also, sometimes, the sun streaming in from the windows in the bedroom enlightens my day — until I get up to close the blinds.
I’m sure some crazy, mad, meaningful words could (in theory) enlighten my day, but the best I can come up with at the moment comes from a weird British show called “Father Brown.” It was one in which (what a shock!) the local priest liked to solve mysteries. And one holy day, he said this most enlightening thing:
“Our Lord asks for chastity, poverty, and obedience. He never said anything about sobriety.”
Amen, brothers and sisters. Amen. Anyone for the pub?

Clearly the Author(s) of that particular episode have never actually READ the (Whole) Bible – like 99.9% of us.
While consumption of alcohol is not denied anyone, drinking to excess is strongly advised against and sobriety in all things is highly commended and prized – As it should be. Alcohol might dull some people’s ability to feel pain but it does nothing to remove the pain or that which causes it from us and can often seriously increase both, to ourselves and others around us – even total strangers.
How can a priest charged with looking after his parishioners best interest possibly say something as dumb as that?
Silly of me – i forget – priests are nothing but men (and these days women) prone to error. 😉
love.

Also, this was a TV show. A comedy. Anyway, the BIBLE may have something to say about not getting TOO drunk, but as far as I remember, getting drunk was very popular from Moses downward. And Jesus made more wine because there wasn’t nearly enough.

I strongly recommend Father Ted. Seriously. It’s the funniest show I’ve ever watched except maybe Upstart Crow and Monty Python’s Flying Circus. 🙂 I am beginning to think coffee is my religion. And Dusty’s.

I thought it was hilarious too. You know they wanted to make a version of it for the US, but they couldn’t agree on the religion. It was eventually deemed “too anti-religion” for this country. Sad statement, but at least we can watch it.

No pub for me, and I usually only drink a cup of coffee out of a little Styrofoam cup, but I love “Father Brown.” Once I went to a retreat at a Mt. St. Mary’s church and I was shocked to see the nuns walking across the lawn with a box of wine bottles. My daughter, who worked there said they had a very well-stocked liquor cabinet. I guess we enjoy life however we can.

I will take coffee over any other beverage. I think I will have to add some to my ice cream tonight! Thanks for the idea.

I nice treat with coffee is to pour it over vanilla ice cream, put a dab of whip cream on top and sprinkle with cinnamon. It’s a fast simple dessert.

My mother was ADDICTED to that. She called it Cafe Royale. It was her ultimate treat. But she was really passionate about coffee in any context. Not just drinking it, but coffee-flavored anything.

I didn’t know that it was called that but it’s really yummy.

I like coffee, but I’m not fond of coffee-flavored things. My mother, on the other hand, liked ANYTHING that tasted like coffee.

I have seen the parish priests put away a few adult beverages at the local Oktoberfest. Stay thirsty, my friends.

I have heard that more than a few can’t keep their hands off that holy wine.

It is not holy until it is blessed in mass, so I guess it is good to drink a lot of it beforehand.
