CBWC: My Pick – The best of the black & white photographs
I don’t know if these are my best black & white photographs, but they are among my favorites.

Bridges and churches do look good in black and white. I suppose the lack of colour makes us concentrate more on the design features.
Your birds are brilliant too, like illustrations for a book.

I’ve always thought architecture looks better in black & white. You can see the structure and don’t get distracted by colors. I’m thinking about making a little book about birds. Nothing serious, just pictures and little stories. Not necessarily for sale, either. Maybe just put it on line. You think?

I think that is a great idea. You have some wonderful bird photos and I’m sure many people outside of WP would enjoy seeing them.

Bird photos and drawings, too. And lots of little stories about them. I have to get organized, though. I’ve been having a hard time with medication and I think maybe finally I’m beginning to see the light.

It will be a good project for the winter when you won’t be going out much.

Yes. Right now, we are out as much as we can manage because the weather is really super — the best of the year. Once winter closes in on us, it’s a whole other story.

These are all lovely, but the first picture and the swan are stunning.

Thanks! The swan is probably my most popular photo, but it is also a personal favorite. For some reason, it seems to have become a better photo in black & white.

Good contrasts with the colours in that picture.

Basically the swans ARE black & white. As are woodpeckers. And both look perfect in black & white.

Our hoopoe birds, which belong to the woodpecker family, are not B&W. They are a lovely reddish brown. I didn’t know woodpeckers are B&W as a result.

With a couple of exceptions, all the smaller woodpeckers are mostly black and white with a splash or red on their head or faces. The very big ones like the pileated are more colorful and the flickers (a different variation of woodpecker) are black and white with a light taupe body — and a splash of red on their face and/or back of the head. They also have a very almost mathematical wing design. Very interesting birds.

They are. It’s hard to pick favorites, but I do love the woodpeckers. I like that they also work very hard to get rid of the pests in the trees. Sometimes, that kills the tree, but hey, they’re birds, after all. They have gotten VERY friendly. I swear they are trying to get into the house — maybe raid the suet trove.

My loeries and Hadedas are also very friendly. Birds are intelligent. I think woodpeckers are lovely – and very clever!

The bridge is this town’s most photogenic thing. The church in town is number two 🙂 AFter that? Lots of birds.
