It was a great boat, too. We had many pleasant afternoons with the wind off the water.

You’ve had good times on thata boat — it is sad to see it go — BUT witht he price of fuel and mooring, there are other things you can do for less! I used to drive several miles a day to take photos — haven’t done that for several years now, but just as I was ready to try it again, the price of gas went to $5.00 / gallon — and it still is! There are now days when I don’t take the car out of the garage!

We drive as much as we need to and that’s not much. I don’t like driving — and Garry’s not far behind me. He’s okay during the day, but hates driving at night or in the rain or snow. We’ve moved from “getting old” to “being old.”
We do go out to take pictures, but we stay in the valley. Which fortunately is very photogenic. Our gas is a little cheaper than yours, but not by much. We are the most expensive on THIS coast.

I drove farther than 20 miles each way last week for the first time since January 2021. In the next day or two will post photos of the Flower Fields, which are about 45-50 miles from here. I was happy to have others in the car who could drive as backup if I needed it, but it went well, and I hope it will give me confidence enough to get out for more photography again!

I drive when I have to, but I don’t feel safe driving anymore. My body has become so unpredictable and anything could go wrong. I know people who have had heart issues and suffered serious crashes because something happened and they were driving. But I do have to drive anyway because around here, there is no other way to get around. The valley is a “drive or walk” place. Well, bicycles maybe, but these aren’t great bike roads. That is the OTHER problem. I wanted to get a scooter, but this road is dangerous. Lots of fatal accidents. Blind turns, badly banked turns — and nowhere to pull off to let speeding car go through. Still, I’m thinking about it. They make some that will travel well offroad and I thought it would be a lot of fun in the summertime.

I’ve driven for about 70 years without an accident, and can go where where I want to. The pandemic and cancer kept me at home for long enough to make driving a little scarier than it used to be. Mobility is a huge issue, particularly living alone! I recently had a wake-up call which is causing me to make a choice between extra stair railing, a stair-lift, or moving to a one-level home. I’m leaning toward the stair lift, but the cost is rather daunting!

Thanks, Garry! Having said that, my only insurance claim was one night when the car was parked properly on the roadside opposite an outdoor theater. I heard sirens, and my thoughts went to brushfires — little did I know that some drunk driver had hit the left rear corner of my car so hard that the two cars in front of mine were moved — She then tried to back outof it all, and didn’t make that work fery well either. My car was totaled!

Stair lifts are useful though expensive. You can also use it to haul heavy stuff up the stairs. An extra railing will help for a while and that’s what I’ve got, too. It’s certainly less expensive, but if you don’t think it will do the job, you are left with moving OR a lift. I think moving is probably more expensive than the lift and a lot less exhausting than moving.
Only buy from a dealer that will service it. If you buy (as we did) a used one, no one will service it. That’s why used ones go for such short money.

Thank you for your thoughts — that’s good to know about the servicing issues. I haven’t yet spoken to anybody about used stairlifts — there have to be some around, but I also understand that whoever it is that removes them pays the owner for them, so that may work out to advantage. Even if all it does is buy me time in my own home, it seems a better option than moving. Extra railing would be less expensive, but It wouldn’t do the whole job (eg, taking stuff up and down). Will let you know when I come to a final decision, probably about a month from now!

Is that you on the boat?

Yes. We didn’t usually go anywhere. We hung out on the boat. The price for fuel was as high as airplane fuel. They sold the boat when the price of a slip at the marina went off the charts, especially when added to regular maintenance costs.
