THE LAST SHOOT OF AUTUMN – GARRY ARMSTRONG

It was raining … which is mostly what the weather has been doing for the past few weeks. There had been one really good day with the leaves and I hadn’t brought a camera. All Marilyn had was a little old compact and while she got a few pictures, she was disappointed that each day came and we couldn’t go out. It just kept raining.

Finally, I took the OM-D and went into the rain to spend an hour wandering around the property and taking pictures. By then, it was clear by the time the rain ended, the leaves would be gone.

It wasn’t just rain, either. The final day of rain became a major wind and rain storm that cleared all the leaves off everything but the oaks. They still have leaves, but the other trees are bare.

Glad I took pictures!

  1. Autumn is my favorite season, beautiful colors and perfect temperature outside. Your shots are magical, very nice shades.

    • It has always been my favorite season. It’s not really cold, but there’s a snap in the air and it is beautiful. It’s still pretty out there, but everything except the oaks are bare. Yesterday was like summer again … went up to almost 80 degrees (27 C). That’s summer, not fall … but tonight, cold again. The plants don’t know what to do!

      • It’s very strange how the weather changes. Last week it snowed and today was 20 C again. A few years ago, in october we had very cold winter, but now every year it’s warmer. I’m from Transylvania, Romania.

    • These were the last of the best. The rain helped, too. The wet leaves make a kind of glow in the woods. Two days later, it was finished. Now, we have oak leaves (bronze and some dark yellow), but the bright colors are gone until next year. This was such a strange season. It showed up a month late, lasted maybe a week in total … and was washed away by rain and wind almost as soon as it showed up. Very disappointing photographically. It is usually our best season.

Now, we got the long month of November — the brown and gold month — and rather quickly, winter. No idea what’s going on with the seasons, though. It could start to snow next week … or not until February. For that matter, it might not snow at all or we might get 12 feet (3.6 metres) of it. Our east coast weather has become very erratic.

  3. Marilyn was right all along… it was a very short fall.

    • We hope so. Because seasons have been changing and I would like to hope we are not moving into a whole new weather pattern based on those “lies” the Chinese tell us about climate change.

      • It’s been changing here since the ’80’s. Our rainfall pattern is diminishing in frequency and the distribution pattern is moving to ur south so that we do not get as much rain as the first half of last century. This year is about the first year in the last 10 when we have managed ( so far) to reach our Average yearly rainfall, but if it is drier now until Christmas we won’t make the average – again! 🙂

I hope your east coast does not have a similar change in store.

The news this morning mentioned that on our states north coast we had the worst ever season of coral bleaching of our coral reefs due to the higher ocean temps. Donald should really come to Australia and see what those evil Chinese have been doing to the planet! 😉

        • I think we are already experiencing much the same. When we moved here in 2000, spring floods with the river rising above its banks was standard as the snow melted. There was usually heavy rain in the spring and when it was added to the spring melt-off, it produced a lot of water. It also rained through the summer and again, quite a bit in the fall, except for October and November which were typically dry months.

We no longer get spring rains. Last year, we got not one single day of rain in May and 2 in June. By July, the rivers were dry and the swans were having trouble finding places to nest. We got more rain this year, but it still wasn’t enough. The rivers are low again.
