Thursday’s Special: Backlit
When your subject is between the light and the camera, you are using back lighting. Sometimes, it’s on purpose — as in these shots — to give a silhouette effect.
Typically, you don’t have a choice. The sky and sun is over there … and here is the only place to stand. Shoot backlit, or don’t shoot.
It works pretty well for landscapes, not nearly as well for portraits.

Lovely – I do a lot of back lit images as well – not much choice as our light is really harsh compared to your softer light

A lot of the time, I have no choice either. That’s the direction of the picture and there’s the sun and sky. You can’t always pick where the sun will be 🙂

It can add mystery to the picture.

Also some interesting tones and shadows. So many of my pictures are back lit … just luck of the draw and where things are located. I think most of my pictures are backlit, or nearly so.

Houses look like they were shot in sepia.

I like your motto: “searching for intelligent life on earth” 🙂 . I search for beauty, humanity and kindness. Beauty – you have already found and these photos vouch for it. Thank you for outstanding contribution. I will have to pick the one I like most (difficult choice) for my preview display. It’s so good to chat with you again, Marilyn.

Thank you, Paula! These days, intelligent life on earth seems more elusive than ever. Art, photography, writing keep me sane. If I didn’t couldn’t do it, I might start to chew the curtains.

That’s why my windows are “in nude” 😉
