Weekly Photo Challenge: Selfie
Despite the suggestion that self-portraiture is a modern phenomenon, it most assuredly is not. The wide-spread availability of cameras and cell phones have made it easy for everyone to participate, but artists have been doing self portraits for as long as there have been artists. Any museum will support my statement.
Why do we put so much effort into our own images? Partly because we are the one model who will always be available, any time of day or night. Then there’s the challenge of seeing what new thing you can say about this person you’ve known your entire life with an intimacy you can never have with any other living being.
What does your face show? Wisdom? Humor? Worry? Joy? Can you grab that feeling and make it part of the picture? Whatever you do, you are following in a very long tradition, a tradition that goes back at least 1,000 years.
“There is nothing new under the sun,” commended Julius Caesar.
Today I am 67 years old … an age which seems impossible. Never did I imagine being so old. In my head, I am the same kid I’ve always been. Marilyn, the girl, has the same dreams, the same hopes, the same feelings she did when she was a 17-year-old. The body hasn’t done too well, but the essence remains. May all of you keep your dreams alive forever.
“We just do the same old stuff using new tools,” says Marilyn Armstrong.

One-day-belated Happy Birthday! Thanks for having a van Gogh at the selfie! You have a face that anyone should be pleased to personify. But if you saw my second-most-recent blog post, you’ll know I published the first bit of my characters’ colour divination system. So let’s do a reading on your colours here. The colour scheme in this photo, including you and the backdrop, has one overwhelming message: empowerment. You may be going in for heart surgery, but much about you is in the peak of your form. Black, the colour of commitment, is all you’re wearing – you’re determined to get through surgery and carry on. The leaf design in the backdrop, with its black for passion and commitment and its crimson for action, shadowed by grey for temperance and built upon white for receptiveness, is like an anatomy of benevolent power – all potential to move, commitment to do so, temperance to keep the calm and good judgment, and the white openness beyond to ensure the mind is never closed. And because this hemichromomancy is always tongue-in-cheek, we can also say that your long white hair signifies your mind’s extreme commitment to receiving new thoughts from wherever that inspiration comes from.
May the upcoming year be fun.

I totally love this and it’s actually pretty close to the mark. Probably because yes, I wear black a lot plus a lot of red. These days, I have almost as many red sweaters as black ones — a distinct change from the past when my entire wardrobe was black — well, that’s at least partly a cultural east coast thing. Women around here wear black so much it can look as if we are wearing uniforms! Still, that curtain was a choice. My “good” colors.
I suspect color choices are like your handwriting — the colors you prefer at a particular time in your life reflect who you are and what’s going on.
The white hair is, however, my homage to Mom — who I now resemble to an almost uncanny degree. Which is strange since I started out looking like my father, but as age has altered me, morphed into mom. Funny about that!
Thanks! That was FUN!

Thank you 🙂 We had a world class dinner, so I have something to remember while I’m on IVs and hospital food. I think it will be okay. Just a mountain range to cross.

Happy birthday! Oh you “must” join my birthday challenge… It is to much of a coincidence to discover your blog now… 😉 My B-day is on the 14th.
This is the last daily challenge and you can see the links to other if you’re curious. The main theme is, of course, birthday. 🙂 http://ivymosquito.wordpress.com/2014/03/09/ivas-awesome-birthday-challenge-day-9/

Thank you for the invitation. Usually, I’d gladly take you up on it, but I’m scheduled for a long meeting with a heart surgeon day after tomorrow. So I’m going to be MIA for a while. I’ll be back in a few weeks … hopefully repaired.

Oh, my. Sorry to hear that. Best wishes for a good turn out. My daughter, aged 44 is have a double mastectomy on Friday as well. She has Cancer. I am sick about it. Life does throw us lemons, doesn’t it?

I had cancer in both breasts and the double mastectomy two years ago. I used to think we could only get one lethal disease per lifetime. Apparently there is no quota. But I’m still here and medicine is pretty good at dealing with breast cancer … and apparently, heart problems. My mother was 44 when she had her first breast cancer, but she was alive 30 years later. Hang on in there.

Thank you for the encouragement, Marilyn. One thing going against her is that she also has Lupus, but it is in remission at present.
Wow, you have been through and are going through so much. Glad our paths have crossed. Have an extra special Birthday, my new friend.

The weirdest and funniest “happy birthday” of the day? I opened Google after midnight and there was a picture of a birthday cake and other goodies. So I said to myself, I wonder who else’s birthday it is?
When I hovered the cursor, it said (still does) “Happy birthday, Marilyn.”
How do they DO that? It’s kind of spooky, but cute!
