Share Your World – 2014 Week 20
Thank you Cee for letting me participate and coming up with cool questions 🙂
If you could go back and visit any time period, what time would you travel to and why?
Probably the Victorian period, late 1800s through early 1900s. As long as I get to be one of the rich people because the poor during that period were probably worse off than they were at any other time in history.
I’m tempted to say the Middle Ages (14th century), but the disease and lack of sanitation is off-putting, though the era is fascinating.
If you could have three wishes granted for you alone, what would they be? This is a time for you to dream and have fun.
1. Be healthy and pain-free, able to move freely and walk more than a few yards. I miss having a body that works like it should. I would wish this for everyone, if I could.
2. Winning the big lottery so I could pay all of our debts, be able to help my friends and live without worrying about how we’ll get through the next month (or week or day).
3. Finding a place to live with good weather. Without a brutal winter or a stifling hot summer. Maybe the Caribbean? If I’ve already won the lottery, we could visit and have visitors all the time, even though we are further away.
Wanting something to quench your thirst, what would you drink?
Coke, fruit juice, whatever. This is not so important to me as it was once upon a time.
If you watch TV what are your favorite three television shows?
NCIS, Blue Bloods and The Black List.

I looove NCIS and am ready to visit you in your Caribbean condo, at any point. I think you chose three really good wishes. 😀

Going back in time is tricky for me. It would have to be a time where there was indoor plumbing & a place when/where women weren’t looked at a mere objects or props or were seen as subservient to men.

Yes, we all seem to be — men AND women — having a sanitation and plumbing issue. And plague and medieval medicine (ouch). And poverty. And slavery. And inequality. Seems like the old days had a few problems — AND there was no WiFi!

God knows I need the magic of modern meds or I’d be outta’ commission real quick.
Inequalities can really suck!

On the plus side, during the time period you mention all you had to do was steal a loaf of bread (in England) to win an all-expenses paid trip to Australia! Lovely 🙂

It was a fabulous time to be rich. A very bad time to be poor. I think maybe the very worst time in western history to be poor … but the middle ages– my favorite historical period — had all that icky plague and rampaging brigands and stuff. Interesting to read about, but I think maybe from a distance. I’m sure there was a really nice time to go back to. I just haven’t figured out what it is yet.

My first thought was the Middle Ages but then I thought ooh, no, Black Death!

OOH indeed. Of course, if you went back you get get inoculated first. They can do that now. And bring antibiotics too. But I think watching whole regions die of plague might be a bit traumatic.

Once, I wrote a post about what time periods I would like to visit. I can’t remember all of them, but I don’t think I would like a time before air conditioning.

Have you ever read Connie Willis’ The Doomsday Book? It’s the first year of the Black Plague in southern France, up close and personal. I was depressed for a month. Most early periods of history are kind of ugly. Even uglier than today and that’s saying a lot. For me, the make-break is indoor plumbing.

I haven’t read that one, but it sounds like I need to.

It’s a series of time travel books … four of them, this being the first. Theoretically it’s sci fi, but it really is just a device to put a modern person(s) at a critical point in history. Connie Willis is a brilliant writer. Her two books about the Blitz (same series) — Blackout and All Clear are the best I’ve ever read about the period. The fourth one, set in Victorian England, is funny and called “To Say Nothing of the Dog.” I love everything she has written, but Doomsday was the first thing by her I read. It’s history very much in the raw … and the 14th century is about as raw as history gets. I was surprised to discover most of her other work is hysterically funny. Good writer! Worth reading.

I think I would prefer the 17th and 18th century because the amount of scientific research done during that time is almost staggering. It would be an eye opener for all of us to see how many difficulties the scientists had to go throw for things that we take for granted!!!

Another interesting period. I think I need to hang around where there’s medicine more advanced than bleeding. Or find a place where everyone was healthy without medicine, like maybe the Americas before white men.

Oops didn’t think about falling ill.I do agree with you on that one but I think i will miss internet too much so no time traveling to the past for me.

Spot on!!!We are slowly becoming technology addicts.I fear that in near future it might as well be declared as a regulated drug

I think winning the lottery would be great- but if I’m going to win I’d better buy tickets! Good luck

Yes, that ticket is something of a stopper, isn’t it!

You would love Oregon weather Marilyn. No extremes in any category here. The people are batty here however. They just threw out the baby with the bathwater yesterday by overturning legislation banning same sex marriage yesterday. The couple were lined up around the block waiting to get married. I won’t comment on all this.
I used to love NCIS. I fell away from it for some unknown reason and never went back. Now, without network TV I choose not to watch the delayed episodes.

I have a good friend planning to move to Portland next year. He has very severe rheumatoid arthritis and can’t drive anymore, so it’s a combination of weather and public transportation … and getting rid of a huge house he no longer can care for!

The TriMet public transportation is fantastic. If he/she is on Medicare or is 65 they are entitled to a free Honored Citizen Transit Pass that gives you unlimited bus/train rides and transfers over a 24 hour day for just $2 a day. It’s fantastic.

He is 66 — and transportation is one of the most important things for him. I’ve known him since he was 19 and I was 20 — young, agile and having fun. Lots of years have passed. Hard to believe we are such physical wrecks now.

It could always be worse, your body could be sound and your mind could be gone. I count my blessing that I’m mobile, able to talk and my mind is sharp. I’m setting myself up for comebacks here I know. LOL
