CEE’S BLACK & WHITE PHOTO CHALLENGE: HEADS OR FACIAL FEATURES
When I was a young woman learning to take pictures, I used black and white film which I developed and printed. In those days, black and white was preferred for portraits, especially for head shots for those in show business.
Times have changed, but black and white is still a fine vehicle for portraiture.

Thanks! Black and white photos are kinder to most of us, putting the emphasis on expression and composition, rather than every blemish and wrinkle. Also, you do can a lot of dramatic stuff with lighting when you have the right equipment.

Thanks Cee! I allowed myself one of each. I held myself in check. I love the black and white challenges because it’s an area in which I need improvement and it motivates me.

The black and white pictures seem to soften the portraits. One tends to focus on the character within the portrait.

I agree. Before digital, black and white was more popular for portraits than color.

Thank you. He looks best when I catch him unawares. Otherwise, he tenses up. Funny, because he’s fine in front of a TV camera, but not in front of a still camera.
