A dog, a red-bellied woodpecker and a starling. Each alone in splendid black & white.

Thanks, Cee. I took some new pictures — my cactuses have come to life — yesterday, but I’m saving them for the next FOTD I do. I’m hoping I get a few more buds opening. The orchids are budding, too, but they have weeks to go before they flower. My guess is about another month, but they are still tiny so it might be even longer.

Great shots, and in B&W the textures of the birds’ feathers, especially the starling’s, really stands out!

I was surprised at how well the starling showed in monochrome. I thought without all his glittery colors, he might look rather dull, but surprisingly, he looked pretty good.

I like black and white for many things, but when the subject is colorful, I feel as if I’m wasting a shot. Duke is fine in monochrome. He’s a monochrome dog and woodpeckers are mostly black and white anyway — except for that red head. It was the starling I wondered about. But he came out fine, even without his bright colors.
