BIRD FAVORITES

CFFC: Birds

I have some favorites and this seems a perfect time to show them off especially since all my feeders are down right now. Between the swarming hornets and an outbreak of avian flu, we are just feeding them on the ground — except for suet which we’ve left out.

Cardinal
House Finches
Goldfinches
Rose-Breasted Grosbeak
Bluebirds
Grackles
Red-Bellied Woodpecker
Pileated Woodpecker

  1. These are amazing pictures, Marilyn. I didn’t know there was avian flu about again.

    • Our hospital notified us because they had a dozen case, most of them hospitalized. Usually i hear from the bird people, but it takes the bird groups longer to get the information. This is an outbreak in New England. Warnings to try to keep wild birds away from domestic chickens and ducks and especially keep them away from water fowl. We don’t get waterfowl here. We aren’t right on the river. But it’s good to be cautious. Bird flu is dangerous to people and last I heard, we are people.

  2. Fantastic! And, you have inspired me with your sketchbook and I’ve started trying to draw my birds too!

    • I think a lot of us can draw but haven’t given it a try. I’ll be interested to see how them come out — after you’ve had time to make a lot of mistakes, of course. No one asks how many I did before I got a good one. Just as well!

  3. Happy Birthday Marilyn. Hope today is grand for you. 😀 😀
I can see why these photos are some of your favorites. They are wonderful. I absolutely adore your second and third photos. 😀 😀

    • Those two pictures ARE my top two, especially the House Finches. When I took it, I could see I’d gotten something special. My only question was if it was also in focus. I have another one of the Goldfinches that’s even better, but WordPress has made their photo library hard to use. I have the originals, but I don’t know when I took them and all my stuff is sorted by months and years. One of these days, I will try to get them sorted.

    • Thanks, Lois. I’m never sure if those Goldfinches are fighting or playing. i think it’s fighting, but they aren’t exactly trying to kill each other. Just yapping and trying to push each other off the feeders 🙂

    • South central Massachusetts — or southern New England. There are five states that form New England:
Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Maine — and it is the only area in the U.S, that has more trees than pavement. 70% trees overall and here we really live in a woods. It’s very messy living in the woods and very buggy, too. But it IS beautiful and we have a lot of critters sharing our space, including foxes and deer, eagles and hawks and owls and many, many birds. It’s an oak woods, too and they drop tons (literally) of acorns, so even if I didn’t feed them, we’d still have a lot of birds and other small creatures eating the seeds and nuts.
