HISTORIC DOGS – PETITE BASSET GRIFFON VENDEEN – AT THE BRIDGE

Tinker as a pup

Once upon a time, we had three furry noisy smelly hounds called PBGVs, or Petites … or, correctly, Petite Basset Griffon Vendeen. Shaggy long-backed short-legged French rabbit hounds. They were funny and smart and had the most musical … and loud … voices I’ve ever heard. Tinker was insanely destructive till the day she passed. Griffin was a cuddly and always ready to entertain you. He loved to make you laugh. Pagan was the sweetest dog I’ve ever known.

They’ve all passed on … Pagan way too early for causes unknown, the other two in their time. The house is cleaner and quieter, but no dog will ever make me laugh like Griffin the clown could make me laugh, or be as totally weird as Tinker was, or as passionate about nap time as Pagan was. We’ll always miss them and never forget them.

      Looks like the Komondor (Hungarian working dog). There are so many new (not so new, just new to the AKC) breeds I can’t keep track of them any more! And so many of them look exactly like a breed from a different country. I used to know ALL the dogs by group and breed and have a pretty good idea of what they were supposed to look like, but these day? There are so many more than there were. I watch dog shows. I watch the big shows in NY and Philly. It’s my version of “the world series.” Just … for dogs!

        Seems like many of the photos are of Komondors and not Bergamascos. A web page for Komondors states ‘white’ is the only acceptable colour for breed. The Bergamasco’s seem to be smaller and multicoloured/dark coloured. The former originate in Hungary while the latter are from the Italian Alps. Either way they are hilarious (providing you don’t have to groom one!) 🙂

          Ironically, to get those nearly perfect coils of fur, there’s quite a lot of grooming. In theory, they are shown as “natural,” but nature doesn’t make them quite that neat and tidy. THAT is a groomer. I think I can safely say that no show dog is ever in the ring without a groomer involved, not even short-haired dogs. The Komondor is a BIG dog, too. One they clipped after his show career was over a couple of years ago had almost 20 lbs of those coils on him. It must have been a huge relief when they finally clipped him! What a weight to carry.
