I WOULD NEVER LET THESE LOVELY CREATURES ANYWHERE NEAR MY UPHOLSTERY

Don’t sit on the upholstery

More birds. Today was the day I figured out why my camera was taking pictures in RAW which I never intended to do. I found the setting! Yay! I also did a little bit of swapping of lenses between cameras, seeing how the very long lens works on my Pen F and putting the 12-400mm on the OMD EM1-Mark II. I like the way the Pen F takes pictures and it’s a slightly lighter, more easily maneuverable camera. We shall see.

Goldfinches

A collection of Blue Jays

Then came the Cardinal

I am finally realizing that like it or not, I’m going to have to shift my photo processing software from my very old version of Photoshop to Corel. I’m so used PS, I have trouble even wanted to use something else, but my software is old and won’t process Olympus’ version of RAW. Today, because I actually own Corel Ultra Photoshop 2021, I was able to process all those RAW images I had accidentally collected. I’ve been dodging around RAW because my computer is pretty full already and RAW images are huge. There’s no way I could store them, so I’d have to work with them, then convert them to jpg, then delete the RAW image. It’s an extra few steps I’ve been resisting. So much of my time is already absorbed by processing, this would add just enough more work to make me wonder if I can keep doing it. Maybe I need to take fewer picture, process fewer pictures. I need to do less of something. It’s well past midnight and I’m still putting tomorrow’s posts together. I think I need to acknowledge my age and limitations, but it’s very difficult. As time goes on, we give up many things and this would be just one more thing I would have to give up.

So we shall see. In the meantime, enjoy the birds. These are a little bit more graphic. I just felt like playing with images rather than just making them sharper. Something a little bit different.

  1. I’ve thought of trying to photograph the birds through my window, but know that I would never capture what I’d like because of the distance and my total lack of interest in window washing from the outside. (I really need to work on that.) So, I’ll enjoy your struggles and successes. I particularly liked your three blue jays. They looked very dapper–like they’d shown up for a blue jay meeting in their best form.

  2. Stunning photography as ever. I rarely do any post processing, always in awe of what you do

    • I get playful with software. But I’m going to have to bite the bullet and switch soon. My PS is so old, I’m surprised it still runs at all. I refuse to subscribe to a service. I want to OWN my software. But meanwhile, I’m having so much fun playing with filter through Photoshop. The filter will work with or without PS, but it’s figuring out what they mean in new software. Wouldn’t it be nice if they used the same words in all the software to mean the same thing?

    • I know I should use raw, but my computer is pretty full and if I’m going to delete the RAW image anyway — and only going to display this online, I have trouble believing it would make much difference. Now — if I was PRINTING any of these — it would be worth it. Or maybe I’m just too tired to take those extra steps. One of the other.

      • Hey can I speculate that the Cardinal (or that reddish bird) was taken with the EMI II? Not that it makes a lot of difference as the PEN-F is a little gem, and no slouch. The one thing that the EMI II has, that may help, is “phase detect focus” in tandem with the “contrast focus,” supposedly gives you an extra leg-up. Dunno, but the birds look extra sharp these days? Also there is a setting you may want to try. Go to menu MF Assist and find “focus peaking,” turn it on and choose a color.., I use Yellow. Then go to the Super Menu and set your focus to include AF+M. That way you can use AF and if you’re not sure just diddle with the Manual Focus ring, it will show you everything that’s in focus for the shot.
