FOTD – March 12 – Birthday Roses
Garry gave me roses and some very pretty white flower for my birthday. Red and white are the two colors I find most complicated to get right. Red, because depending on light, the colors change sometimes dramatically and white because not only does light change it, but they reflect other colors.
Often, when you enlarge them, white flowers have little bits of other colors you didn’t see before. These white flowers actually have a tiny pink stripe on them. I’d never have seen it except for enlarging the photographs on screen. If you look carefully, you can see it in the next photograph.
The only thing I don’t like about roses is how quickly they die. They are perfect and glorious for two days and by the third, they are dropping petals. But right now, they are absolutely perfect and I’m glad I took a few pictures.

It’s not so much the getting old because that’s what happens when you don’t die younger. It’s the ungracefulness of it. I wanted to flow gently into age, not crash land.

Flowing gently – yes – that’s a big ask. And crash landing is very tough. Sending you a hug.

Happy birthday Marilyn. The roses are so beautiful and your photos are fantastic. I’ve noticed that the roses these days also have no smell and I love the smell of roses, but that doesn’t stop me from enjoying them when they are available.

Thank you! I think when they made them less thorny, the scent diminished. It’s there, but it’s not as strong as it was. Roses grown outside still smell the same and it is a wonderful scent.

The hybrids have very little scent but if you can find one of the old fashioned rose bushes they are wonderfully scented. I can remember the ones my dad used to grow smelled heavenly, but I have yet to find a hybrid from a hothouse with any smell at all.

Thank you, Sadje. And it’s day three and they are still looking good, though now they are fully opened, so I’m not holding my breath for tomorrow.

They do start to shed petals once they are fully open.
