It is raining. Not a sprinkle. Not a quick cloudburst. Real rain starting quite early and continuing. It was raining hard earlier and is now raining steadily, but not “tropical.” The rain is supposed to come and go during the next few days. I hope this time, forecasts are right. It has been such a long dry spell and we need this rain badly. The groundwater is low. If it dries out, we have no backup water source.

Di (thank you Di!) is still standing in for Melanie who I hope is doing well or at least better. Not having heard from her, I actually have no idea.
Do you prefer tea, coffee or juice first thing in the morning?
I have always preferred coffee but lately, coffee and my tummy are not getting along. In fact, it is making me sick. It’s not the caffeine. It’s the acidity. For that matter, citrus isn’t good either and I’m not overly fond of tea, so I’m drinking coke. It’s not the world’s best morning drink, but it’s what my stomach can manage. Everything else makes me sick.
When it comes to food, what is your favourite smell?
Rosemary and vanilla. Not in combination, but each separately. But to be fair, I love other smells too. Bread baking, fresh lemons or oranges, plus the smell of salt from the ocean. Right now, I’m loving the scent of wet leaves in the rain!
Do you prefer a take-out or to dine in a restaurant?
I prefer a dine-in restaurant, but we don’t have many still open and those that are open are expensive. Mostly we get delivery — usually some version of Italian food. Pizza, subs, or calzone. That’s what’s available.
If you are hosting a party, do you prepare the food yourself, get caterers in or ask everyone to bring something for the table?
It has been a long time since I hosted a party. Except for my wedding and my son’s wedding, I prepared the food myself. I don’t mind people bringing food, but I cooked so I’d know there would be enough and it would be good enough to actually eat. You just never know what other people are going to cook and whether it will be enough to feed the number of people attending. Safer to make food and whatever others bring can add to your cooking.
What has been the highlight of your week over the last seven days?
The Goldfinch came back from their summer in Canada — and today, it is RAINING. Bright yellow birds and water falling from the sky?

That’s about as good as it gets these days.

It can be a bit hit and miss getting people to bring food. You don’t want to end up with twenty badly-cooked mini-lasagnes 🙂

Thanks for joining in again Marilyn. Sorry about the coffee and caffeine issue.
The little birds are always fascinating to watch.

I miss coffee. Not the jolt because caffeine never gave me much of a jolt, but simply that taste in the morning. Not being able to drink orange or grapefruit juice either makes it worse. I’m hoping things calm down inside and I can go back to something like a normal morning. Either that, or I’d better learn to like tea!

I’m a teapot, but if out, I am likely to opt for a latte. I can’t drink orange juice as it’s a trigger for migraine, and grapefruit is apparently not recommended for diabetics.

Grapefruit — which is really my favorite — is a nono for so MANY things, it’s ridiculous. Most of my BP meds can’t be taken with grapefruit juice or actual grapefruit (the fruit), nor the meds I’m taking (NSAID) for spinal arthritis. But I used to be able to drink at least a little bit of OJ. Coke really doesn’t do it as a breakfast beverage. I’m going to have to learn to like tea.

Flavoured teas hold any appeal?

Not yet (Garry is very fond of vanilla tea and chamomile) but I think I’m going to have start experimenting. Clearly past experience isn’t doing the job anymore.

I tried a couple of fruit teas but found they left a ‘tang’ in my mouth so I stick to the usual Yorkshire tea, weak decaff coffee or hot water at home.

I am going to see if I can find low acidity coffee. Give that a try. Something has to work.

I’m sorry to hear that coffee no longer agrees with you I know how you used to enjoy it. I rarely have it at home now because Naomi doesn’t like it, or the smell of it. I used to make it days she was out all day but lately I haven’t even bothered to do that. I grew up a tea drinker anyway.
Good news about the rain though.

Yes. It is STILL raining — even harder today than yesterday. I sort of expected this. When the weather breaks around here, it REALLY breaks, so you go from NO rain to LOTS of rain. But right now, lots of rain is a very big deal!!

No pretty leaves this year I suppose. It’s been too hot and dry hasn’t it?

Love the goldfinches.

They are such a bright, pretty bird – at least when they are in breeding colors as they still are. They will fade soon as breeding season ends. I always know spring is really here when they turn bright yellow again.
