March 20, 2015. It was the first day of spring. Cold, raw, with leaden skies and a promise of snow. Supposedly not a lot of snow. The forecast called for less than an inch. Not noteworthy. After the past 7 weeks, “noteworthy” has a new meaning.
So I said “Let’s go shooting,” and Garry agreed.
Garry goes out everyday. I am sometimes inside for a week or more. Usually, it doesn’t bother me. This winter, though, I haven’t been able to get out at all, not even to the backyard or deck.
Finally, I got restless. I had a sudden, urgent need for a change of scenery. An airing. It was, after all, spring. The vernal equinox.
We went down to the river and took pictures.
I’ve lived in the northeast my entire life, minus 9 years. Garry too. We’ve both been in New England through many winters. I don’t remember this much snow still on the ground so late in the season. Not in my 28 winters. Garry’s been here or in Boston for 45 years and he doesn’t remember one like this, either.
I don’t necessarily expect it to be warm and flowery at the end of March, but I expect the snow to be mostly melted. Maybe see a crocus or two. Robins returning to build nests.
Not this year. No crocus, no robins. And the thing is, it’s cold. Still dropping into the low twenties at night and barely going above freezing by day.

See you’re still in the white of it too. Can’t wait for spring to really get sprung! ❤

It’s raining. It has been raining all day and probably through tomorrow. A lot of the snow is finally disappearing. Not planting or flowering weather yet, but better. We needed some rain to get rid of the piles of frozen snow.

Inspite of the cold and snow, it does look very pretty there.

It is beautiful and it is NOT frozen. It was frozen a week ago, so there is progress. I love the shiny river, so black against the white banks. It’s a visual treat, but green would work for me, too. Better even.

I love, love the first picture. I saw some green in our flowerbeds today, I think the tulips might get brave enough to come out :-).

Our garden is buried under several feet of ice. It will take weeks. Hopefully with warmer (predicted) weather, it will tip the scales and it all will MELT. Finally.

It’s crazy here. Brutal cold with snow during the weekend, today it’s in the high 50’s, rain and tomorrow it’s going to be in the 30’s with snow again. My old bones don’t like this anymore..not at all.

It’s been a roller coaster here too, but they are seeing shifting winds and when that happens, the season should finally switch. Finally.

I think our weather patterns are changing- they keep saying the temps are below average, but I think every year in recent memory the temps are below average this time of year- we need to re adjust the averages! Glad you got out even if there is still snow-love the reflection of the trees in the water

Those pictures indeed do not have spring written all over them 😉 But it are nice photos!
How come you can’t get outside during this winter?
In The Netherlands, we barely had snow, but luckily spring started fine. Little flowers everywhere! No warm temperatures yet however.
Have a great day!
Kind regards,
Tieme

This is a rural area. We don’t even have sidewalks on which to walk and the snow was so high, there have been long periods where we could not get out of the driveway. It’s beginning to warm up. By next week, I think it will look much different.

It’s warming up. Slowly. Rain today, but it will help wash away the snow.
