CEE’S SHARE YOUR WORLD 2016 WEEK 23
What was one of your first moneymaking jobs (other than babysitting or newspaper delivery)?
My very first job was in the receiving department of Bloomingdale’s in Fresh Meadows. I counted the items in incoming shipments and matched them against invoices, then stapled tags to items so they could go onto the shop floor. It was where I learned the meaning of “markup,” how a wool skirt that cost 75 cents was sold (in 1963) for $18.00. I was young and naïve enough to be shocked.
My next job was at college where I wrote press releases for the public relations office. I think it paid $2.00 an hour, but it was pretty good work for a college student. And unlike most part-time jobs, it was fun and was on a “writing” track.
What is your favorite month of the year?
October.
What three things in nature do you find most beautiful?
Mountains and almost all natural formations of water — lakes, rivers, oceans. Waterfalls.
Trees.
Sunrise.
Flowers. Wild and in the garden. With butterflies, hummingbirds, and buzzing bees.
And Fred.
List at least five of your favorite spices? (excluding salt and pepper)
Vanilla.
Ginger. Chili powder. Garlic. Thyme. Cumin. Basil. Rosemary.
And many combinations of the aforementioned and stuff that I forgetting because I forget things. I use less oregano than I used to, more chili (mild, but flavorful). Cumin often instead of black pepper and in combination with garlic powder. Fresh herbs and spices when available. Yum.

Okay. Are we talking about late 1950s or early 1960s?

You worked at Bloomies! They used to have the best full-page ads in the newspaper back in the 70’s. I used to save them–my dream then was to be a fashion designer. Needless to say, dream unfulfilled.

I got a huge employee discount. That was BEFORE Bloomie’s was so fashionable. It was just a nice department store … but I was about to start college, so that discount was a BIG help.

I worked at Abraham & Strauss–in the Men’s Department. Needless to say, my dad’s wardrobe greatly expanded! Gotta love that employee discount.

Early jobs included golf caddy for women (oy!); pin setter, bowling, for women (oy VEY!); First full time job — stockboy and then salesman for Childrens’ Shoes at a major department store.
Favorite month: July. I still like it hot with minimal clothing.
Nature faves: Sunset, view of the ocean, a warm breeze.
Spices: Ginger.

You couldn’t get away with markups that high in retail today, at least not in my sector of the market. Then again, I don’t get to see what our markups in clothing are, and they HAVE to be high with how much we always end up clearancing out after season. $3 a shirt is probably still making a profit…

Trust me on this one. They pay a few PENNIES for that $3 shirt. I was shocked way back when — and I guarantee you the profit margin is bigger now, not smaller. That’s why everything is made in 3rd world countries that have no minimum wage or unions. It’s all about the bottom line. Probably that isn’t going to change and it’s pretty much universal. The bigger irony is that I’m not sure that the quality of the stuff your store sells is different from the stuff with the higher price tag and fancy label. I suspect it all comes from the same sweat shops in the far east.

I concur with your choices except for the favourite month. I like June, it’s the furthest month from winter.

I know what you mean, but autumn colors are my favorite and it really is the best weather of the year here, though June is usually a very close second.

Now, with a little luck, maybe we’ll get some people in charge who love it too — and are willing to protect it or at least, stop destroying it? We can dream!
