FLOWERS OF THE DAY – THE ROSES, OH THE ROSES!
When I went out and spent a day cutting the roses as far back as I could, I thought they might not grow this year. I was so wrong. Wow, I was very wrong.
The roses were a little late in getting started, but they have covered the bush. They look like the rose bouquets that cover winners of the Derby.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many roses on a bush. It is the first time the roses have ever outdone the daylilies!

You have given me motivation, Marilyn. I am not a fan of pruning–a little snip here and there, and I am cringing all the while. But this–this is beautiful. This is the year of the hard prune for me!

I think it was the hard pruning. I really took my clippers and went after them this year. I cut them WAY back. I didn’t know what would result. For all I knew, I’d killed them. So no one was more surprised than me when I realized I’d completely revived the bushes. They looked terrible last year, so I figured I didn’t have much to lose!

They’re beautiful — and they love being cut back after the last frost and when flower buds begin to swel!

I really hard-pruned them, so I was surprised at how intensely they responded. It’s like all new bushes. I wish I could get into the back and prune the pink ones, but I can’t get there.
