FOWC with Fandango — Theater
When the dogs barked me into awakedness this morning, I figured that must mean my son was here. They get frenzied, vying for his attention. But to be fair, they pretty much bark me awake every day.
At least it was daylight and I was ready to get up anyway. It isn’t always as easy.
Sometimes, they get nibbly by 4 in the morning when I am NOT feeling nibbly or particularly affable. I still give them biscuits, even though they don’t deserve it.
It’s faster to feed than argue.
I looked at the window and realized some of their frenzy was because two big squirrels were hanging onto the bird feeders.
The dogs don’t get excited about birds, but squirrels on the deck? NOT to be tolerated.
Then my son came up the stair and soon had refilled both feeders and the show was one. Birds. This was the entire run of birds. Out came titmice and chickadees.
Red finches and nuthatches. A couple of woodpeckers and a few Sapsuckers (you don’t see them often). The feeders had been close to empty, so the word apparently went out and everything with wings showed up for a feeding.
The birds are looking rather fat. I’m sure winter will slim them down, but right now, we have roly-poly birds.
I tapped on the window and the squirrels were so startled, they fell flat on the deck and took off. Those were not thin, hungry squirrels. These are fat, thickly furred healthy squirrels. I don’t mind feeding them, but I prefer they not hang on the feeders.
There’s plenty of goodies on the flat feeder and the deck. I may get them separate feed as winter comes on, but right now, they seem very content with corn and sunflower seeds.
It’s our morning show! Birds fly in from the woods, a few squirrels hang around, the dogs’ bark and I try to drink some coffee.
That is theater!

Your comments about the squirrels made me laugh and reminded me of this Carling Black Label advert featuring a squirrel and a bird feeder

That was really funny. Someone pointed out (maybe a few people?) that a squirrel WILL get to that bird feeder, no matter what you do. So I bought the feeder which said “The squirrels will come, but ours will survive the onslaught.” So far, so good! Thank you for a fine laugh.

At least the sales spiel was honest! We don’t get squirrels just mongoose in the garden. i am a little nervous of feeding the birds because of rats and mice. maybe a birdfeeder would be the answer.

Do a little research on how your local birds like to eat. Some birds will ONLY eat from a flat feeder, others only from a hanging feeder. Also, not all birds eat the same food, so they make food specific to a particular region. Although I think with the exception of really small finch, everything eats corn and black sunflower seeds. As for other grains, it’s very regional. I’ve upgraded to a better food, but I’m not sure that was such a good idea because they birds REALLY like it and birdseed isn’t nearly as cheap as you might think! Neither are bird feeders!

I didn’t know how much I was going to enjoy it either. It’s the first thing I look at in the morning when I get up and I’ve got a table full of cameras waiting for that right moment … and there are many right moments.

I think birds must have a kind of radar about food. One discovers some and soon they are flying in from everywhere. If you offer one seagull a chip you will be inundated with their friends and relatives or give a curious duck a bit of your lunch and the next thing you know you are surrounded.

Seagulls are really AGGRESSIVE. We had one take the steak right off the grill and fly away with it!

Most places have signs telling people not to feed them now. They get very aggressive towards each other as well.

But this was a steak on a FIRE. It was not afraid at all … and they are NOT afraid of us, either.

Sounds like our house except it’s the cats who wake me up! I love my feeders and finally had to start buying the more expensive metal ones. The squirrels climb the pole, swing on the feeder to knock it off and then it breaks wide open. They think it is a pinata, just for them!

I put out one flat one so the squirrels can get something too, but the hanging feeder is as close to unbreakable as they make. It’s not the squirrels can’t get to it, but they can’t destroy it. Squirrels are like the dogs. ALWAYS ready for a meal.

Truly it is. And it can get quite exciting, if you feel that way about birds 😀

Make sure the birds do not fall off their perches when they get too heavy.

I think it’s entirely possible. They are really rather roly-poly!

Very birdish. The literally flew in from everywhere in the woods. How did they know? But they knew. Every one of them.
