FOTD – June 21 – Summer Garden
I always look forward to this time of year. It’s when the daylilies and roses bloom. Somehow, the daylilies have managed to bloom despite the invasion of Bittersweet, an Asian climber that has gone out of control.
Reports say it can grow as much as 60 feet in a year. Personally, I think that’s an underestimate. I think it grows any number of feet every day and if it got into my house, I’m pretty sure it would wrap itself around me and bind me to the bed between midnight and dawn.
Cutting it down doesn’t seem to have much of an effect on its growth. Nonetheless, it’s still blooming and all I can do is admire its enthusiasm.

They are blooming, but not doing well. They come up, get strangled or burn up in the heat. Not going to be one of the good summers. But for however long they bloom, they are at least pretty.

Oh so beautiful Marilyn. Mine are just starting but with nearly 100 degree temps this week, they will probably burn out more than bloom. 😀

A lot of ours are blooming and dying in less than a day. Between the heat — it’s hot here too — and all those strangling vines, it’s having a really hard time surviving. I didn’t think ANYTHING could kill the daylilies, but apparently I was wrong.

I hope so. A deer ate all our newly planted daisies. I’m beginning to think maybe gardening isn’t working out for us, at least not this year. They ate them all the way down to to the ground.

My daylilies are starting to bloom here as well. It’s a lovely time of year, well, except for your bittersweet which is usually removed by digging and smothering in black plastic. Hard work meant for a younger person if one is around. 🙂

My son is 52 with a bad back — and he is the KID in the house. I think we’ve just lost that garden. We can, after the roses bloom, just cut it all down (except for the Rhododendrons). There’s still hope for the back garden, but this bittersweet defines “invasive.” It is evil.
