I got a note from Intel today advertising all the new computers that will get its latest, greatest chips. Supposedly these new chips, says Intel, are 50-100% faster than the chips most of us use now. These new chips will show up in all the — NEW — Windows 11 operating system computers — and they are already on the market. Dell, Asus, Acer, Lenovo — really, all PCs — are ready to go.
But — Windows 11?
Microsoft’s odd-numbered operating systems have been dicey and don’t work until the next even numbered version. This is because Microsoft doesn’t test their operating systems. They throw them out into the market and let us sort it out. When we have complained enough and have done all the testing they should have done, then they fix ithe system, so it’s always the next version which works well or at least better than the previous one.
But the thing is, I’m not unhappy with Windows 10. Aside from wishing the computer had more connections which is not an operating system issue but a machine design problem, it does what I need it to do. The best part? I own it. I’ve paid for it. I don’t owe money on it. From my point of view, that is as good as it gets.
My computer is 3 years old this month. It isn’t old. Moreover, I don’t have another thousand dollars plus to buy one more computer that does the same thing I can already do. I don’t think three years should be enough to make anything “old.”
I resent being told my over-priced and relatively new machine can’t be updated.
It’s not that they don’t make computers which cost less that theoretically could do the same or similar tasks — mostly photographic. It’s that they are putting fast but small solid state drives in the new machines.
I currently have a standard 1 TB drive and another 512 GB solid state drive (SSD) to hold applications and the operating system. Even with this much storage, I don’t have enough.
None of the machines they advertise would work without a significant storage upgrade which would turn a $900 machine into a $1500 machine in a nanosecond. I don’t have the money. If I did, there are other things I need to do with the funds. So rather than replace a good computer with one that runs a little bit faster, I’ll hang with this one. It runs as fast as I can work and a lot faster than I can type.
I think for all of us there comes an end to spending huge chunks of money when what we have works fine. I’ve spent a fortune on computers. I think I’ve had enough.

I agree. My computer is only 2 years old. It doesnt have the ability to be upgraded to windows 11 though, or so it told me, but, I don’t care, I’m happy with win 10. XX

All has been already said and shared. I am kind of sick and tired of keeping up with the latest in technology. Diwali is round the corner and this festival incurred lot of expenditure so no other device for me either.

I think a LOT of us are tired of being pushed about to spend more and more money when really, there’s nothing wrong with the equipment we have. I don’t see anything in the “new” Windows 11 that will make any difference to me. I refuse to be pushed into another major purchase, especially since I really need other things a lot more.

I tend to love getting new tech but only on my terms, when I feel I need it! At the moment I’m very happy with my laptop which in any case is only about 18 months old. If it can’t update to Windows 11 I really won’t care!

I don’t think my computer is OLD! Faster isn’t necessarily better, either. I don’t have that much money to put into something that works find and the probability that the new OS won’t work well for at least the first year is very high. I too will just stay with what I’ve got. I KNOW my computer works. No testing required.

Absolutely, Marilyn. I agree entirely. Computers, just like cars, are bottomless pits, and enough is enough.

That’s how I feel about it. My computer isn’t a cheapie throwaway, either. It cost some big bucks. I don’t see ANY reason to replace it unless what I’m getting is a lot better — and I don’t see what they could fix at this point. I LIKE my computer!

I was going to say something, but after reading what everyone else said, there is nothing left to say. I am OK with Windows 10 on my still functioning computer which does the job nicely. OK, I also have a Mac book computer so perhaps the best of both worlds. At the golden age of 75 why should I invest in a new computer. And by the time it might be worth it I would probably be approaching 80 years and will be glad to function in every day life.

I have a Mac too, though I almost never use it. It’s my “backup” system. I need new windows and a replacement toilet a LOT more than I need another computer. We have a house full of computers already — and a new OS from Microsoft is going to take a year of being “out there” before we are even sure it will work reasonably well. Been down this path MANY times. I don’t feel like doing it one more time. They’ve pushed me into a new computer at least half a dozen times before this and I’ve just had enough of being pushed around.

I saw a piece on YouTube where the person was saying that many fairly up to date computers won’t run Windows 11 because of the processor. Last night Naomi told me that she just had a Windows update and a message from Microsoft to say that her 3 year old computer won’t be able to run Windows 11. I got my update this morning and my computer, just one year old can run it. But do I want to? I’m happy with Windows 10, well I liked 7 better but that’s gone and I have got Windows 10 to what I am comfortable with. I don’t want to change for the sake of it. I haven’t read about any features that Windows 11 has that I particularly want or need. It seems very app based as if to make our desktops look and act more like smart phones. Well, you know what I think about smartphones.
So I think I’ll wait until I have to before I “upgrade” to Windows 11.

I feel exactly the same way. My processor isn’t fast enough for Windows 11 and frankly, there’s nothing in it I want. So what if it’s faster? My computer is faster than I need anyway. I don’t run heavy duty games and processing photographs and writing aren’t speedy enough to warrant the amount of money it will cost. This computer is just 3 years old. Not only can I not AFFORD to replace it, I actually don’t WANT to replace it. I LIKE it. I hate setting up new computers and with a new operating system, I doubt my aging version of Photoshop would run anymore.
I used to work at Intel around the time they were creating wireless technology. I was dubious about it — and rightfully so because it took years until they got it sorted out. Short of Microsoft BUYING me a new computer and setting it up for me — and making sure all my software still works — the last thing I need is yet one more computer.
They are talking about supporting Win10 for many years, probably because many computers can’t use it. I hope so because I’m not going to be forced into a big expense I can’t afford.

I agree. Microsoft wants to sell operating systems to computer manufacturers so it is in their interest to make us think we need to buy new ones. I will buy another laptop or maybe a tablet, haven’t decided yet but I want my desktop to last as long as the old one did , seven years or more if possible.

Ditto! I LIKE my computer. It’s plenty fast enough and I need a new bathroom and some new windows with some urgency. Another five years and then we’ll see. If I’m still alive, that is.

I have heard that you should be ready to buy a new computer if you want to upgrade to Windows 11 — there’s something about the new chip that is required to make the W-11 run at all! I’ve decided to keep mine as long as it will do what I need it to do, and then perhaps Win-12 wil be reality!

I think they are going to discover that MANY of us are not going to pay big bucks for a new computer we don’t really need. My computer is more than fast enough already. They aren’t offering anything I really need. Yes, faster — but for what reason do I need a faster computer? Or one more operating system in which I can’t find anything? Again.
I’m tired of being pushed around by computer companies and for that matter, phone companies!
