The Changing Seasons, June 2022
June went by so fast it almost disappeared before I grabbed a piece of it. It came in like a lamb and went out like a rabid lion.
It was a dry month here, moving from a springtime of nonstop rain to 2 months during which I think we had maybe 2 days of rain and a few sprinkles. We are officially having another drought. So far, it’s not as bad as last year, but we are still 6 inches below normal rainfall as we head into the dry months of summer.
May and June are the months of flowers. May was chilly and everything was slow to bloom. Finally during this past week and a half, everything bloomed. There were birds too, though it was harder to get pictures because my window was blocked with the flowers I grow inside the house — my indoor garden.
And Garry and I took each other’s pictures. I took Garry’s pictures because he’s trying to get a bit of work as a movie extra or, with luck, a commercial — and he just likes taking my picture.

The Changing Seasons is a monthly project where bloggers around the world share their thoughts and feelings about the month just gone. We all approach this slightly differently, though generally with an emphasis on the photos we’ve taken during the month.

What a wonderful display of beauty, Marilyn. It uplifts me! I wish to be surrounded by flowers; alas, I have some I’m keeping on my deck and caring for ever so diligently (I need more color!). Temps here will reach exactly 100 by Thursday and Friday. My two favorite pics are of you and Garry. 💛

I have to water my deck plants every day. Not always heavily, but at least some or the wither in just a couple of hours. It has been hot and sunny here too. Not AS hot, but the sun has been constant without even a cloud to create a bit of shade. We are sidling into another drought year, I’m afraid.

I’m watering each day too and will hold off on anything new to try and keep beautiful ~we have an actual forecasted day of 100 degrees this week (first time since 2014) and near that each day anyway. It hasn’t rained a drop at my place in over two weeks. Perhaps a pop up shower might find Finn and I today! But they are rare! You and Garry please take care. 💛

It’s very dry here too. They kept telling us it was going to rain, but it didn’t. Storm alerts everywhere, but in the end, not a drop. We’re 6 inches below normal and it’s just the beginning of July. There was very little rain in June and even less in May. The world is drying up.

I don’t know if he’ll get any work, though I think he will. He’s very agile and active for a guy his age and they are looking for that.
The flowers and the birds make me happy. I can just look at them and smile and not think about anything else. Right now, I need that. A lot.

I’m loving your bird studies, Marilyn. They have such a distinctive style, abstract and yet particular. They are reminding me of an early 19th century Coalport porcelain bird pattern:

Thank you! You’re right! I’ve never seen Coalport porcelain before. It’s beautiful and reminds me of a lot of Chinese and some Japanese porcelain. The birds remind me of mine though mine aren’t quite as good as those. I am evolving as I draw. I used to draw when I was a kid. Then I started working, had a child, continued working and I forgot about it. But lately, I felt an intense need to do something different that wasn’t done on the computer.
I’m not sure what I’m going to do with the drawings. I thought of a kid’s book, but I it’s only an idea because I don’t have a story. Maybe these will turn out to be just for the fun of it.

Fun and creative expression for oneself alone are great nourishers. Much needed in mad times. I think I need to take a ‘leaf out of your book’ and find/revive some lost pursuit.

I have a really bad feeling that things are going to get much worse and soon. Probably not as bad out here in the boonies where we are underpopulated, but I think cities are going to explode. It has happened before, but I think it’s going to be worse this time. I’m just going to keep drawing pictures, watching funny movies, and hoping we still have a government that can pay us so we survive. I have never lived through a time like this. I didn’t think it could happen. I erroneously believed people were too smart to allow the government to run amok. Even now, more people are worried about the dip in stock prices than losing their freedoms.
More birds. More art. Lots of good music because I’m too old to do much else.

I’m thinking much the same. And it’s not only the US gov run amok. All the big western democracies are edging towards dictatorship. I’m astonished that people aren’t more aware of the growing threat to freedom. But once you’re permanently locked into your smart phone, it seems all powers of discretion and critical thinking fly out the window. Eisenhower spelled out what would happen in 1961 if people did not remain vigilant.
So yes, stick to your lovely birds, funny films and good music. We have to care for ourselves, whatever wat we can. Btw the Coalport porcelain factory (now part of the Ironbridge Gorge Museums) was/is on the River Severn not far from Much Wenlock. I had a spell working there long ago, which is why your birds jogged my memory. Nnot to spoil the creative spirit, maybe you could work them up into something with commercial possibilities. Just a passing thought.

He loves being on video. He has more trouble posing for stills. I got him to sit on the grass and relax. It helped me get much better pictures of him than I’m usually able to get.
