LITTLE BLUE FLOWERS

FOTD – Feb 23 – Little Blue Flowers

I’ve had these flowers growing in my garden since we moved here and I never knew what they were. A few years ago, someone said “Oh, those are primroses!” Well, a bit more research and I have no idea if they are some kind of primrose or something like veronica. So I think I’ll return to calling them “those little blue flowers” that grow everywhere.

Mayflowers?
Spiderwort
Wild blue primroses
Blue Hydrangeas

We grow a several kinds of little blue flowers. Some are closer to violet, others more blue blue. Some are a bit bigger than these, but none are large. A few are downright dainty. Here are two more types of little blue flowers we grow. One is (I’m pretty sure) a violet, though we have a so many of them them and in macro look like tiny irises.

Violets

And finally, that other little blue or is it purple? It grows everywhere.

These are sometimes very blue, but can also be closer to purple and I don’t know what they are except pretty. More like creepers than flowers.

  2. Beautiful splash of purple and blue, Marilyn. I’m no expert at all, but the mystery flowers look a bit like some kind of Aubretia to me. Whatever they are, they’re lovely, and I wouldn’t mind having some in my garden! 🙂

    • I’m terrible at plant recognition. I think I slept through botany in high school and never took it in college, so I have no idea what the various parts are called. Once we get past “petal” and “stem,” I’m lost. They always want to know all kinds of information about the plant and I never know the answers. The only flowers I know well are those that I grow.

They DO look like Aubretia, but these grow wild. Maybe they originally were garden flowers and escaped? When we aren’t having a drought, they climb up the fences and rocks and are very pretty. I can’t claim any responsibility because they were here when we moved in and I thought them pretty, so I let them keep growing. In a bad year, they are sometimes the ONLY flower that survive.

I think you might have nailed it. The picture looks exactly like them, though they are more purple than blue, but these are sometimes purple and blue on one plant. I’m pretty pathetic, aren’t I? I don’t even know where to LOOK for the plants.

      • I’m exactly the same as you with plants, Marilyn, so if I’ve nailed it then that’s a first for me! I didn’t have to sleep through the botany bit at school because my biology teacher didn’t like plants, so he ignored them and only taught us human biology!

Having said that, I hope it is some kind of Aubretia you’ve got there, as that’s one of the only plants I can recognise and I love the stuff. It grows easily on rocks and fences, so that’s another tick in the box, and I’ve seen some very purple varieties around. So much so in fact that I’ve been contemplating trying to grow some on our new(ish) garden wall. And I believe they’re pretty hardy plants. But whatever it is that you’ve got blooming in your garden, it’s very pretty indeed. 🙂

        • It is super hardy. During that last drought, all the other flowers died. We. were forbidden to water anything. These survived through 4 months of no rain. I’m hoping after all the rain we got this year, they will thrive. I don’t know yet how many plants are gone for good. We lost a lot of plants mostly from dryness, but also by getting eaten by hungry animals.
