The Changing Seasons: November 2016

The Cardinal has announced that this challenge will run again through 2017. I love this challenge. It’s my favorite, first and foremost, because living here in the country, the weather is our calendar. It surrounds us, engulfs us. Regulates what we do and where we do it. It has presence and power in our lives. But the other reason is that I know it’s coming and regardless of the weather or my mood or plans, I have to go out and take some pictures. Sometimes, it’s the only thing that will get me into my boots and overcoat and outside with the camera. It’s a wonderful motivation for a lazy photographer.

If you’d like a challenge that will actually challenge you — in a fun way — this is a good one. It’s also a challenge in which many of the participants are so much better photographers, it pushes me to try to be better, more creative. Find something new to say about a scene I’ve shot many times before.

It’s the final month of shirtsleeve weather before winter comes. It’s the month where you may get snow, but the roses continue to bloom. Autumn leaves have lost the bright scarlet and yellow of October and transformed to the dark red, rust, and bronze of November. Leaves still cling to oak and maple trees. The quiet waters of the river reflect the gold of the trees.

The late afternoon sun is amber and casts long shadows. The strange sunlight changes the colors we see, turning bronze to yellow. Our eyes do indeed deceive us … or the camera’s eye cannot capture the November hues.

The stores are advertising Christmas while families are still organizing their Thanksgiving invitations. Hurrying the seasons has become the standard. I understand the merchant’s need to sell, sell, sell. I hope they are equally understanding of how much we would like to get through one holiday before being battered by the next.

From Cardinal Guzman:

What’s this «Changing Seasons» blogging challenge?

«The Changing Seasons 2016» is a blogging challenge with two versions: the original (V1) which is purely photographic and the new version (V2) where you can allow yourself to be more artistic and post a painting, a recipe, a digital manipulation, or simply just one photo that you think represents the month. Anyone with a blog can join this challenge and it’ll run throughout 2017.

It doesn’t matter if you couldn’t join the first month(s), late-comers are welcome.

These are the rules for Version 1 (The Changing Seasons V1):

  • Tag your posts with #MonthlyPhotoChallenge and #TheChangingSeasons
  • Each month, post 5-20 photos in a gallery.
  • Don’t use photos from your archive. Only new shots.
These are the rules for Version 2 (The Changing Seasons V2):

  • Tag your posts with #MonthlyPhotoChallenge and #TheChangingSeasons
  • Each month, post one photo (recipe, painting, drawing, whatever) that represents your interpretation of the month.
  • Don’t use archive stuff. Only new material!

  1. Lovely pictures. I particularly like the shots of the dam. 🙂

  2. I look forward to visiting you each month and quite agree about how the challenge motivates to get out and take some photos, though saying that I have not been very good at that this month. Too wet, too windy and now too cold. I am such a baby!! But all is not lost, there is a week left for panic to set in!

  3. I’m glad my challenge pushes and motivates you! It pushes me too. Right now, when I’m writing this, I can’t really tell if it motivates me or not, but that’s because I’m at the office now and the only thing that motivates me is 16:00 o’clock.
I silently announced that the challenge would continue through 2017 last month (I changed the “about the challenge” text), but nobody noticed, so this month I thought I’d point it out. 😀 Anyway, it’ll be nice to run this for another year and I’m glad that you’ll be participating. next year I strongly suspect that I will have plenty of time to work on private projects such as photography, because the boss at my company is so eager to get rid of me that he probably jizzes his pants just thinking about it.

    • I did actually notice the change in the text. I didn’t comment about it, but I did notice. Sometimes, I have edited it slightly when publishing. Bet you didn’t notice that either 🙂 Or, if you did, what was there to say?

December is so far a real dud for photographs. Pictures of the dogs, the house, a few of the woods, but nothing particularly good or interesting. But we’re going out night shooting maybe over the weekend if it’s clear and not too terribly cold. Maybe that will give me some inspiration.

      • You’re probably the only one that noticed it. My plan was to sneak it in the text and then see if someone commented on it. 😀
I can’t remember if you have changed the text or not, but I have, on occassions, seen that some bloggers have changed it up a bit (I might have seen it in your blog, but in others too). Anyway it’s OK for me, because the text is long and it’s usually (10 out 12 times) exactly the same phrases.

December has been a photographically boring month here as well. I haven’t shot much, but I’ve been doing some much needed cleaning up in the archives and also edited a lot of old material. The other day I did go out with my camera and a couchsurfer from Ukraine. Still haven’t looked at the photos, but I believe there should be some decent shots there. The Ukrainian guy left yesterday, but he’ll be back for another couple of days next week and today an American lesbian couple is staying over, then tomorrow a Spanish girl comes for the weekend. I’ll probably go for a walk with the Spanish girl and shoot some photos for the last Changing Seasons post this year.

    • Thank you 🙂 Almost all of these are new, though some are from the same batch as others I’ve published — just different views of the same place. November has been a surprisingly good month for photographs.

  5. Gibbs looks a little put out about something. Could it be the weather?

  6. Pause the changing seasons.
We’re just a few days away from Big Bird Day, President-Elect Orange Head’s tribute to the Pilgrims, Black Friday (Blatantly racist) and a zillion cases of tummy aches from over indulgence.
Hark! I hear the Christmas commercials!!
