Flower of the Day – Daylilies
They are beginning to wilt a bit. There are more buds, so we aren’t going to run out of daylilies quite yet. Nonetheless, when you look at the garden, you can see the difference. Lots more wilted lilies, many of them going to seed.
The big mass of red roses is beginning to fade too. But unlike the daylilies, the roses will keep coming back all summer. Not with the same massive blanket-like enthusiasm of this month, but there will still be roses until winter’s frost arrives.

Wh doesn’t like lilies? Simply gorgeous.

I love that they grow absolutely everywhere in New England. It’s ironic that they aren’t native to the region, but they have surely taken over like they were born here. I can’t imagine a summer here without daylilies.

That’s true! They certainly signal summer all over New England. I love them along the country roads.

It makes the roads particularly lovely in June and early July. Later, it will be black-eyed Susans and other wildflowers, but I think the daylilies are the best.

Love lilies, we had lovely ones this year, but a rabbit or rabbits visited my backyard and ate all the leaves and the flowers. 😦

Do you have deer? They also love lilies.

No deer around, but lots of rabbits. I’ve placed a bamboo fence around the lilies now, trying to save them for next year. 🙂

For us, the bulb eaters are the skunk. They really like to dig for bulbs. I think the only reason they don’t is our dogs who are fenced, but loud.

Here squirrels eat all the tulips bulbs! 🙂

Squirrels stay mostly in the air, up in the oaks because down below are coyotes and bobcats … and more recently, bears. So they stay up there. The only worry up there are red-tailed hawks and eagles.

Beautifully captured.

Thank you. I think that not having the sun directly on the lilies really helps capture them.

It is nice filtered light that way.

The daylillies seem very enthusiastic — especially around the front walk gate. I feel as if they are embracing me as I walk through the gathering of daylillies.
