SKETCHBOOK 30 – PETUNIAS

I know a lot of people don’t like petunias. They think they are dull plants, but I love them. They are the backbone of flower box gardening.

Petunias, from spring through the fall

They aren’t as interesting as many other garden plants but planted in a flowerbox, they bloom for the whole summer, late spring through fall. The thing is, “interesting” flowers are often fragile. Petunias look fragile, but are very hardy.

They require nothing but sunshine and water when dry. They come in every possible color and sometimes interesting architecture. When you want flowers and don’t want to have to work hard to keep them alive, petunias are your flower.

The Primrose — the garden form — is a Petunia

You can make up some magnificent flowerboxes and instead of making you work, you can relax and enjoy them.

  2. These are beautiful, Marilyn! I love petunias. My mom loves them, too. They are hearty, indeed. I can always count on them! I’m headed out now to take a few pics. I thought of you two this morning when two Cardinals visited me. I’m feeling worn out and icky and it was a sign of hope! It was also a sign to get outside. Sending best wishes, prayers, good vibes, and a good dose of sunshine from MO to you (before the rain hits us the next 3 days!). Take care, both of you! You’re such a gifted artist!!

    • They were one of two flowers I could grow in Israel in full sun. The other were geraniums. Pretty much everything else — even some cactus — would burn up in that sun. Lantana, begonias and petunias are the heart and soul of deck and patio gardens.

It is raining all this week here too. Not heavily, for which I’m grateful, but everything is damp. The ground is always muddy. We need dryer weather to give the ground a chance to firm up!

    • I think flowers were the things I was best at. I wasn’t bad at birds, but I was a lot better on flowers. Today I get the nurses to come and explain what all the tests they took yesterday actually mean. I get results really fast, but they are just numbers and letters and I have NO idea what they mean.
