PROVOCATIVE? LIKE BOMBING IRAN? – Marilyn Armstrong

Fandango’s Provocative Question #55

It’s the question of the year and this is only January.

Do you feel that Donald Trump was justified in ordering a drone strike that resulted in the assassination of Qasem Soleimani, the commander of Iran’s elite Quds Force, in an airstrike in Baghdad last week?

Do you think Trump’s decision will lead America into a hot war with Iran?

Do you think Trump’s motives are political and self-serving?

I am essentially in almost every possible way, against war. How many wars have we had in my lifetime? I was born just after World War 2, after which there was Korea. We got out of Korea, but then came Vietnam where we lingered until we declared victory and left. We left as we always do, leaving our supposed allies to face death and destruction. Remarkably, people keep trusting us. I don’t know why they do.

War doesn’t solve anything and inevitably leads to more war. WW2 was a “moral war,” but it wouldn’t have occurred had the terms for WW1 (which was just all the old regimes of Europe having one final “go” at each other because they felt like it) not been so cruel. Every war leads to another. Which leads to a few more. Then there are wars that just break out because someone hates someone else and feels obliged to kill them en masse. Gotta love those genocidal wars.

There are no good wars. Not here, or anywhere.

As far as I can see, there will never be an end to war because we don’t want peace. We say we want peace, but we don’t act like it. Should we have killed their General? I don’t know. If we’re going to do it, we should have gone in and done a quiet assassination and slipped out silently. That is assuming that his death was in some way a good thing for this and other countries — which I’m not convinced is the case.

Will this lead to a hot war with Iran? Maybe not, but last night I was ready to call everyone I care about and say goodbye. If we’re going to get bombed, I hope they hit us dead on. Better that than a slow death by radiation. You can’t figure out what Trump will do. I don’t think he knows what he is going to do.

All of his plans are political and self-serving. I don’t think he has any friends or has loved anyone. I’m pretty sure he doesn’t understand honor, service, faith, or truth. He certainly doesn’t understand our Constitution, science, or language. If it was some other guy, maybe they would be thinking about why we do or don’t want a war, but this is Trump and I don’t think he believes in consequences, so he doesn’t need a reason to do whatever it is he does. He feels like doing it, so he does it. All that matters to him is being celebrated and told he is the greatest.

In my opinion, he is the greatest of all assholes. Ever.

  1. I am very tired of American foreign politics in general. Trump is the tip of the iceberg but I was already unhappy with the American foreign policies before him. The USA is guilty of everything they accuse others of doing. And currently one of the biggest threats to global peace.

I always remind myself of the clear differences between politicians/leaders and people/citizens. Not only do I like American culture (guitars/music/food and more), I also met a lot of beautiful human beings from America through blogging, including you.

It’s people like us who practice true peace, by cultural exchange. Not matter where we are from. We are the ones who truly want to live in peace. But the higher you go in the chain, you see it’s about influence, corruption, greed, power, and hegemony and that’s where the moral compass gets lost. So, small people like us make and practice peace, not those narcissists and bloodthirsty in power.

I do agree with you, war is no solution, war only creates more hate and it’s a doom loop. I wish, one day there will be true global peace but I can’t see how that ever will happen. I don’t have much hope for that.

    • I really doubt we want peace. That is what we say, but really want violence. Yes, America is incredibly hypocritical. We’ve had good decades, but we are run by greedy corporations who have no morals. I think most large countries are like that and it is a tragedy. I haven’t liked any government policy in my 73 years of life.

    • We’ve gotten almost NO news about the crash. The stations try to show something, but there’s nothing to show. Iran cleaned up the site and no one here is saying anything. I am terribly sorry. I am so glad to not be on a plane again. Ever.

  3. Amen to that last sentence. And prayer and making sure our loved ones know our feelings for them is mandatory I think. Because ‘it’ is coming. Any sensitive being can FEEL it. And maybe I just need my meds adjusting. Thanks for your plain speaking in this post, Marilyn.

    • It’s not weird to be afraid of war when we are dropping bombs and they are dropping bombs. I don’t THINK it’s happening because everyone seems to have pulled back for the moment and I’ve lived long enough to be on the brink of war a lot of time in the course of life. We’ve also occasionally been on the brink of peace, but we never quite make it. War is apparently a better money-maker. Peace doesn’t jazz up our armaments industries.

    • I think everyone rattled their biggest and best saber, but that no one got killed means Iran warned us (either directly or indirectly) what was happening and we moved everyone out of the way. One of these days, the rattling will go wrong and we will all die in a wrong way big bang.
