SPRING FLOWERS AFTER FROSTY NIGHTS

FOTD – April 27 – Spring flowers that survived frosty nights

We had a few warm days and nights. Then, we got more warm days with wintry nights. This is odd. I don’t remember any spring with weather like this. It goes up into the 60s by day so days are lovely — warm and springlike — but it drops below freezing at night. Our rhododendrons were covered with fat buds until the freezing nights came. Yesterday, I saw all the rhododendron buds had turned black. There will be no flowers this year. I assume the roses will bloom. They always bloom. And, after all the tulip shoots we had growing, only one –🌷 a bright yellow tulip — survived.

Trees are blooming. They seem better able to survive frosty nights. Plus, we got a second round of daffodils. I think we will have a nice showing of daylilies and more than usual Solomon’s seal. I don’t know if the hydrangea will survive because there are a few more cold nights coming. It’s rare to have such normal wam days with such cold nights. More than rare. It’s usually cold or it’s warm, but never both. And our poor trees look very unhappy. But those that aren’t dead seem to be intending to leaf.

There are many dead trees or barely alive trees with lots of dead branches. On the up side, the woodpeckers are really happy, chowing down on the richness of juicy insects in the dying trees. I have never seen so many woodpeckers or for that matter, robins and bluebirds. All the insectivorous birds are thriving.
