We now, after almost 350 years of nationhood, have a president who thinks mining — coal mining — is a good idea and a fine way to make a living. Oddly enough, someone else had this idea years ago.
It was hilarious — and stupid — then. It is no less stupid and hilarious now.
BEYOND THE FRINGE – Peter Cook
Why I’d Rather Be A Judge Than A Miner
I think it might really be funnier now than it was in 1964.

Hilarious – still!

Too bad the men are gone now. I used to love watching Dudley Moore. Not only was he hilarious, but he was an amazing pianist.

Reminds me of Tom Lehrer as well!

But the great thing about Lehrer was that he actually WAS a math professor AND he played the piano and sang. I don’t know about you, but I didn’t get that in college much.

We’re lucky we can still see these guys on YouTube.

If you have the money, you can buy their complete shows on Amazon, but expensive. Like … REALLY expensive.

Went to a live Broadway show, back in the 70s, with Dudley Moore and Peter Cook, Well, not WITH them, but starring them, called “Good Evening”.., one of the funniest two-man shows I’ve ever seen. Those two guys were the heart of “Beyond the Fringe”.., Bollards anyone?

This video of Peter Cook is so funny! So timely. Maybe it will lighten your day as it does mine.

I don’t just “like” this. I LOVE it, Marilyn!!! We need this. We need humor to get us through this absurd moment of history. I often turn to Kafka, Camus, or Sartre in times like this. They speak poignantly of the abyss and the absurd. But they’re very solemn, as I often am these days. Jesus invitation — “Come unto me, all you that labor and are heavy-laden…” — is embedded in my heart from childhood. All these years later, my inbox takes me to your post. Peter Cook’s droll humor has lightened my load.

I have remembered this little for all these years. Especially the end: “When you become too old and tired and stupid to do it anymore, you’re out. The very opposite is true with judging.” How bizarrely true is THAT.
Yes, we need to laugh, too. If I am angry all the time, I begin to lose hope.

I remember the coal mining days in England until they closed the pits. Perhaps it was good, but there was a battle before it happened. One of the achievements of Maggie Thatcher

It’s hysterical! Perhaps we could persuade our fearless leader to become a coal miner?!
