We now, after almost 350 years of nationhood, have a president who thinks mining — coal mining — is a good idea and a fine way to make a living. Oddly enough, someone else had this idea years ago.

It was hilarious — and stupid — then. It is no less stupid and hilarious now.

    I don’t just “like” this. I LOVE it, Marilyn!!! We need this. We need humor to get us through this absurd moment of history. I often turn to Kafka, Camus, or Sartre in times like this. They speak poignantly of the abyss and the absurd. But they’re very solemn, as I often am these days. Jesus invitation — “Come unto me, all you that labor and are heavy-laden…” — is embedded in my heart from childhood. All these years later, my inbox takes me to your post. Peter Cook’s droll humor has lightened my load.

      I have remembered this little for all these years. Especially the end: “When you become too old and tired and stupid to do it anymore, you’re out. The very opposite is true with judging.” How bizarrely true is THAT.

      Yes, we need to laugh, too. If I am angry all the time, I begin to lose hope.

    I remember the coal mining days in England until they closed the pits. Perhaps it was good, but there was a battle before it happened. One of the achievements of Maggie Thatcher

    Our current PM must have seen this sketch too. He is very partial to coal.
