FOWC with Fandango — Welcome
When this movie came out, I saw it every day for two weeks. I thought — still think — it’s one of the best movies ever made.
I usually went with a friend. I went twice with my mother, but sometimes I went alone. We have a copy on DVD and it gives me shivers.
Who knew that more than 40 years later, the movie would feel relevant in my country?

Oh! It’s been decades, literally! Thanks so much for reminding me how truly amazing this movie was.

I think it more or less swept the Oscars that year. I’d have to check but it was a really big deal.
The film earned a total of eight Academy Awards in the 45th Academy Awards:
Best Director (Bob Fosse)
Best Actress in a Leading Role (Liza Minnelli)
Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Joel Grey)
Best Cinematography (Geoffrey Unsworth)
Best Film Editing (David Bretherton)
Best Original Song Score or Adaptation Score (Ralph Burns)
Best Art Direction (Art Direction: Rolf Zehetbauer and Hans Jürgen Kiebach; Set Decoration: Herbert Strabel)
Best Sound (Robert Knudson and David Hildyard)

Yes, I remember that as well. More than the awards though, I think it captured the imagination of everyone who saw it, or heard the songs. Truly one of a kind.

I never saw the movie. Perhaps it’s time that changed.

“Cabaret” is still very powerful and relevant. I’m always bowled over by the “Tomorrow Belongs To Me” number.

It’s brilliant. In my list of favorite movies, this is in the top five. And it will give you the chills. It isn’t supposed to BE relevant.

Amazing how that opening line cues the entire song–still humming after all these years. I think I only saw it 3 times.

I saw it first as a play, and when, at the closing, a bout twelve Nazis in full uniform walked to the front of the stage, I got goosebumps and a real fear that, “My God, they’re here!” It was a frightening experience. Even more so now because they are here.

Fritz Wepper, a German TV actor was in the film playing a boyfriend of Lisa Minelli. He is a lot older now, but still appears on TV. We thought it might have been his big chance to become internationally known, but it remained as a single appearance

Still, if he had to appear in ONE movie, THAT was THE move. I don’t think there has ever been a more beautiful and terrifying movie — with fantastic music.

i would have argued with you, but I can’t. I never understood them in the first place and now? No sense at all.

It still amazes me that it hasn’t been a one-way trip during my lifetime. I naively thought that everyone was on a road to evolution in all ways including wisdom and compassion, and it stuns me that it isn’t like that–

Me too. I can’t believe that we are fighting the same battle — AGAIN. Does it never end? Can we ever stop fighting the same things over and over?

I think we saw it relatively recently on Netflix. It was still as good as it was when it came out.
